After some thoughts from the Pistonheads masses.

I tried to start my 2007 Mondeo last night, but there was no life to talk about. I measured the battery voltage which was 8.7V (not powering, or cranking). These have a lead acid (silver calcium) battery.

Do we think that the battery is recoverable? It sat for nearly 2 weeks in the snow, with many nights below freezing. No interior lights on etc.

I'm debating buying a CTEK type thing to see if it can be, or should I just buy a new battery*?

Ta smile

  • I'm leaning towards just buying a battery.

Nothing to lose by trying. If it does come back to life, it'll have lost some capacity but impossible to guess how much.

As it's been down to 8.7v I think your chance of rescue is slim.
Even if you can recover it then how long before it goes again?

I'd replace it.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I think I'll just replace it to be honest as I am not sure it will be recovered, and even if it does I don't want to risk it letting me down away from home.

I'm pretty sure its the original one on the car, so would be 10 years old. Its had a good innings.
