Hello,

I have found a couple of 981 gen Cayman which i am very interested!

1: http://bit.ly/2klHoeO White 981 Cayman

2: http://bit.ly/2BO3q3H Red 981 Cayman

They both work out similar monthly payment although they have very different specs. My concern here is the white one with a manual gearbox.

Perhaps i am suck at "real" driving, but i find a car with auto gearbox easier to live with and i like PDK for it's very fast shift.

Please give me some suggestions, dos, don'ts, things or options to avoid/get etc as this will be my first Porsche lol coming from a F30 BMW.

Cheers. biggrin

The white one says "Press vehicle" - that would give me collywobbles. Of course it could just mean (at best) it was lent to a magazine as one of their long-term test vehicles. It probably hasn't been properly run in and it might mean it has been thrashed to within an inch of its life for almost all of its 25k miles. It would have to very cheap for me to touch it with a bargepole. The link to the other one isn't working at the moment.

I agree with you. It is a nicely specced car with one of the smallest price tag, but i will never know what has been done to it being a press car.

This is the 2nd car i have saved which has a PDK, 6000 miles done by 1 previous owner, Sep 2015 registered.

I love the colour combo: http://bit.ly/1LivR4q but i can see many features are missing like Sport Chrono, Sport Plus button, Navigation etc.

Please let me know your opinion. Newbie here!!!

Or, it has a 2 year warranty. Does it have any over-revs, if not what else could previous drivers have done? Assuming dealer walks buyer round car on a ramp to demonstrate all OK surely?

Probably this one..

A 'press vehicle' wouldn't be my first choice but a used car from an OPC has to conform to minimum standards and carry a two-year warranty. So presumably Porsche think the car's alright. But ask about over-revs and suchlike.

My 997 C2 was ex-Porsche Cars GB and what it's history with them was I don't know. What I do know was that it was as new when I got it (at c8,000 miles IIRC) and it was a joy to drive and own.

Most motor journalist will have much more mechanical sympathy than average Joe, non?
Sure, you presume that someone who bought the car outright with cash will baby the car (if that is a good thing is an other matter...).
I'm not sure this is true. And what about all the leased cars?
Also there are these old myths that press cars are "better built" or "higher tuned" (Jaguar E-type press car). I don't think that is the case anymore. But they sure have been inspected between the lent it to different press outlets, no? One wouldn't want small warranty claims to happen while a journalist is on a drive.

For what we know, it is inspected and sold by Porsche and comes with the usual warranty. That's as good as it gets!
Everything else is speculation. Go for it!

That’s a very nicely spec’d car.

I hunted for a long time to find a Boxster S with Sport Chrono, PASM, PSE and PTV as I was keen to get all the options. The PSE sounds fantastic and is a must have in my opinion.

I don’t think I would be too bothered about a press car. Porsche themselves are of course the best people to maintain a Porsche! Who knows what the press might have done with it, I suppose it’s easier to abuse a car with a manual gearbox, than PDK (simply because the PDK won’t let you down change into the wrong gear or abuse the clutch), but I doubt the journalists would have completely trashed it. And it will come with a 2 year warranty anyway.

Might be worth seeing if Porsche can print off an engine report, over-revs and whatever else it might show.

The link to the other car doesn’t work – although red cars are best!

PS. I have PDK and it is awesome. I would test drive both and see what you prefer. You don’t want to go with manual if you think you will be disappointed about not buying the PDK. Which is best might depend on what sort of driving you do. One major advantage of PDK is to be able to put it in Drive when you’re in traffic and treat it as a regular auto.

IMO the red one isn't a great spec for that money, low mileage or not.

I think the red one will have some mega depreciation, given that you're paying top money for it with so little miles on the clock. Pile some miles on it and you will have a fairly low spec Cayman with average miles on.

I'd buy something with slightly higher miles, but with more spec. But spec is personal preference, depends if you want PCM, Sport Chrono etc...

Why does such a lovely looking car have three previous owners in a couple of years?

Mine has a similar spec, but with PASM and 14 way seats.

It had done 13k miles at 18 months old when I bought it. Private sale with 1 1/2 years warranty left.

£39,750 in Nov'15. Price new was £54k.

For an OPC sale I guess it's about right, but now I know I'd put PASM at the top of my options, especially with 20" wheels (as my car has).

PASM isn't that common on the base 2.7 so you may struggle to find one. 14 way seats uncommon too, but give thigh extension and seat tilt, lumber adjustment, electric steering column (more useful than you'd think!).

Also GR looks decidedly PINK in some lighting conditions, just to forewarn you.
