Hello

My mum used to get my, or my Dads, old "hand me downs" when we changed cars, but that stopped a while back when we kept getting larger cars she didn't want. She has been using a 2007 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol 115bhp Ghia (so has a fair few 'toys') for the last few years but now wants something newer with satnav.

Ideally looking at something up to about 1 year old, no more than 10k ish miles, with satnav and similar sized to a Focus hatchback or small SUV. I nearly had her sold on a pre-facelift Seat Leon earlier in the year, but there was only the slower 90bhp engine left which she didn't fancy. Car mainly for commuting (dual carriage most of the way) but does occasionally get a 250+ mile run to the north of Scotland, hence the desire for something that can also be called on to overtake caravans and similar slow vehicles.

So far the Seat Leon, in various 1.4l trims, would seem like the best bet? A VW Golf would also fit the bill, but versions with Sat Nav seem rare as it wasn't standard on the pre-facelift models? She also likes the Nissan Juke (we don't!). Although a decade ago we'd have had 3 Fords sitting outside the house, none of us particularly like the newer interiors, which is a shame.

Moving away from VAG and Ford my awareness of what's out there starts to become a bit thin.. so hoping fellow PHers might have some suggestions of other cars to look at that might fit the bill? Ideally looking at around £12k but some flexibility for the right car. Parents live in Glasgow so pretty much every manufacturer has a dealer within reach.

A couple of months back (October) my mate picked up a new Peugeot 308 (pre facelift) for 13.5k, this was not a base model but a good spec 2ltr Blue HDI model (18 inch wheels etc). They are a good car, have some minor issues but nothing serious, barter hard and you should get a bargain on the smaller 1.2 petrol's or 1.6 BlueHDI derv.

Surely Kia or Hyundai would fit the bill? longer warranty, fixed price servicing, generally decent spec and a good approved programme.

Thanks for suggestions... after trawling lots of car pages last night, mum wants to test drive:

Seat Leon
Nissan Pulsar
Mazda 3

Any thoughts on these? Nissan Pulsar is an interesting one - seems to be really good value brand new (after discounts) and nearly new, and reviews generally seem to be pretty good too?
