Life is far too sanitised now I think.
Discussion
I was born in 1966, had a fantastic childhood.
So much freedom and optimism.
It feels to me literally in the last year that the world has gone a bit daft with people getting all worked up about the slightest thing.
When I started to drive we were nuts, cars were held together with sellotape, tax in post, we did some crazy stuff. People think young drivers are dangerous now! Go back to 1985 mate.
You could do things then you just can’t now, things are so controlled and regimented.
I went to football in the 80’s. always a punch up, foul language, with your mates it was brilliant. Now, the media would have you believe that violence and drinking is rife, to my mind it’s not a patch on 20 or 25 years ago.
Everywhere you go your on camera, drop a piece of chewing gum you get a fine.
Ok this is a poor rant but I do wonder whether we need to loosen up a bit on the way society takes offence about the smallest thing.
Others?
I was bullied mercilessly at school. Everybody was. Whether you were tall, short, thin, fat, spotty, wore a turban whatever.
Your mum didn’t come up the school and complain.
Now say anything and it causes an investigation and I’m sure people think bullying is worse than ever. I don’t think it is.
You can’t have a laugh now it seems. This morning I found myself worrying that some of the (few) conquests of mine in my youth might come forward to make a claim, it’s got that daft!

I live in a white picket fence (or UK equivalent) fantasy world that never really existed. I am displeased that my fantasy world cannot be recreated in reality. I have a hard time reconciling what actually happened in the 60's with what I imagined happened so I will attack anyone who dares to point out the flaws in my non-existent fantasy world.
I remember the 90's, I also remember getting a big Tetenus needle jag right up my arse in the 90's getting half my face scrapped off doing stupid stuff as a kid. Current times are no worse than those times, just different, they're definitely better than the 60's as we no longer have significant gang problems, crimes are lower and everyone can afford to drive a car and go in international holidays. I remember a time where having a TV was a luxury, not something we take for granted, what an age we live in. This is just another "old man yelling at cloud about the "yoofs" of today" thread, yawn.
I was born in 82, we played out all the time, I spent the full summer holidays when I was 12 through 16 at my parents caravan site left to my own devices with miles of woodland and a few mates who were allowed similar freedoms, only seeing the parents on weekend and just being left with enough gas to cook a few meals and a few quid to get on your bike and head to a local village and pick up odds and ends
minimal personal phones, no social media, minimal internet, no youtube, etc...
making your own entertainment
for my 15th birthday I got my SJ410 and used to use this on the caravan site and it was ace, learning to drive off road in the woods and forestry trails, getting stuck and having to either winch it out or plead with a local farmer to help! great happy days
I was talking to someone a couple of weeks ago who has a 17yr old daughter who they dont allow to stay in the house alone ... shes nearly an adult and not allowed to be left alone ... ludicrous!

i was born in 1952, central birmingham, no inside loo, or a bathroom. no car in the family. was outside all the time playing, first motorbike at 16, first car 17, 2nd car a sports car.cant remenber insurance costs, did wait till i was 23 to insure my beach buggy, dont know how kids could insure one now.
I was born in 1969 in Kent and have lived in the South West since 1970.
Living and working out in the sticks, away from major roads and people means that I still have a fairly quiet and peaceful existence as I had when I was a kid. Now we have ebay and Amazon we can buy most things without ever having to go to a City which is very nice.
Every time I visit family in the South East I despair about the road system and that it always seems to take hours to travel about 5 miles.

You're getting old and forgotten that when your old man said the same thing to you, you rolled your eyes. You are now doing the same thing to the generations below you.
As time moves on things change. The childhood you had will never be the same as other generations because too much has been altered - there is better technology, better \ worse environments, past issues have been shifted to something else and our overall understanding of the world has moved. You're not comparing like-for-like.

Born in 1986 myself and spent all my time outside from about 4, grew up with a mountain bike underneath me and the world in front of me.
From maybe 8 i would be out for hours, returning only for water.juice or food. 11 on wards i'd be lucky to see my mum before dinner on a weekend and would venture for miles on my bike, much further than most friends were allowed, I thank those days for my sense of direction now.
Now my step son (11) bearly leaves the house and moans when he's asked to take the dog out for 20 minutes, when he does he's got free rein to venture within limits of course (mums rules). My son (5) will walk for hours away from the house and turns into a lazy wee s
t when he knows we're going home, hopefully have my sense of adventure but with roads being as busy now I do worry.
My OH has had worrying conversations with other parents when the step son has ventured maybe a 1/2 mile up the road to a friends, they think that is to far for their own kids and these people are ruining the world. Youtube, Ps4's and TV do carry a lot of blame but.

I think what the op's getting at is the same thing that someone mentioned.
It's over nannied. Fault is always to be found. Kids must be thought about 24/7.
I've a mate who won't let his girlfriend go out for a night out unless she is being dropped off and picked up by him or someone they know due to "all the rapes"
Ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.

t hole. Your rose tinted glasses may think litter improved the streets in th 60s. It probably didn't.I cannot do with the fuss and reglations, there was a local story about a man ho was walking his small well behaved dog, walked by his side but not on a lead. He was fined £70 on the spot. He made a fuss, the warden called the police who said he had to pay the fine, all for walking a small dog.
An older driver, parking their car, the car next to her was a Range Rover and parked too far over in their space, she moved over to give him some room, concerned that her car ould be dented and knew that the spaces were narrow, she ended up parked with one wheel on a white line. Charged a fine.
Man went into parking bay at a shopping centre, no charge for parking. Stayed an hour. Went back in the evening with his children, had food and again did some shopping. £90 fine through the post because he had stayed more than 90 minutes in a 24 hour period.
We should not have to put up with this.

In some ways, things haven't changed much, My friends kid was getting bullied, his mum raced in and demanded the school sort it out, spoke to the bullies parents threatening police action, she and the school didn't manage and if anything made the bullying worse, the law of the playground hasn't changed it seems.
His dad signed him up to kick boxing classes so he could defend himself earlier this year.
I saw nephew at the weekend, he told me that one of the bullies started again, I asked what did you do. He replied with a big smile on his face, and said I just laughed at him told him he was stupid and if he really wanted to fight he is welcome to come down the gym any time. I asked if he did come down, and he said no way he is a pussy only hard when his mates are there.
No more bullying, and all down to kick boxing mainly by boosting his confidence in how he handles situations and the self respect he has built up. His school grades have also improved as a direct by product of his Coach and he seems a much happier, confident young man.

I was born in 1962.
Every September, when we went back to school, the head would stand up in assembly and tell us which kids had died during the summer hols. There was always one, sometimes two, once 3 (but to be fair that included 2 sisters in the same car crash). Car crashes were the usual culprit. No seat belts, air bags, crumple zones etc. Drowning on holiday made the odd appearance, and playing on the tube lines got a couple over the years.
When my kids went to school, between the two of them, they had one kid die during their entire time at school, and that was from cancer.
Bloody health and safety. All these kids not dying needlessly. How are they meant to learn?
