You're correct, the v5 becomes invalid once you have done the online retention. The salesman may want the car out this month for figures so may be willing to wait for the correct v5?

Are you wanting to put the plate on your new car?

As soon as you go online and take the reg number off your car you will get a retention code to use when transferring the number onto your new car. It’s a very good system and really easy use. The only problem is that you will ideally want the V5 of the new car in your name before transferring your old plate on to it, but they come through in a couple of days.

I remember waiting at the local DVLA Office whilst they did it all over the counter, what a faff.

Yeah, the new car is being registered with the private reg and I'll be collecting it with the private plates already on it. I don't understand how he's expecting me to part exchange my current car without its valid v5... surely he's aware that I can't just retain the private reg the day before as I won't receive the v5 in time?! That's why I'm so confused, because the info he's giving me doesn't seem right.

I would say he simply knows it will be back in a couple of weeks and your trade in is going nowhere in the meantime anyway.
