Maybe people are thinking more about what they buy and don't buy the tat

It gets sent to China-annexed FSR Tatistan. Most of it gets broken down for use in making general-issue tat for Eurasia; with any leftovers being put towards next Christmas's tat before being shipped back to Western Europe.

When I worked in retail, we'd usually reduce it in the Jan sale till sold. Smaller indies may well store it.

Bought some Christmas tree lights a couple of weeks ago from the local garden centre, 2016 stock 30% less than the 2017 stuff, and on an adjacent shelf but different colour packaging. People were still opting for the more expensive ones though.

Back in the day when I worked in retail, all of the car cleaning gift sets that were unsold by Halfords at the end of the season were split up and sold separately.

Anything that was christmas specific, was either discounted massively, or went back to the distribution centre and sold off to market traders.

Check the bay of E from Dec 26 onward, will be plenty of listings for 'bundle of unwanted christmas gifts' with the usual story of "split up with my ex, no idea what the gifts are but I know he always bought me decent gifts" or other such garbage.
