So my son goes to uni in England and wants to buy a first car that is fun but small, practical, and comfortable. The insurance for most of the cars I've seen are quite expensive so I'm looking for something that is cheap to insure. He is 17. Any suggestions?

All the cars below are Group 10 or less so insurance should be reasonable:

I assume from the way you worded that, you're from outside the UK? Is your son's driving licence a UK one, or from another country?

Bluntly, at 17 he is better off in something "disposable" as there's an almost certainty it will end up in a ditch/round a tree/in a lake/covered in radioactive ooze.

Peugeot 206 or a renault clio both decent, easy cars, cheap(ish) to insure and easy to pull out of a ditch.

Spend £400 on it, and £400 on a replacement when the first ends up in a ditch.

I'm always drawn back to a scene in road wars or whatever it was, 19 yo lad in a brand new golf on PCP wrapped it round a lamp post. Never mind GAP insurance, he was 3PFT. Naturally he thought the council were to blame and was utterly clueless as to the whole world of pain he was about to endure. Spending £6k on a car for a 17 yr old isn't imho the best use of £6k.

Or did you mean 6000 pounds as in 6000lbs, as this one is 6500lbs

Even got room for some furry dice.
