I went to see a Skoda Superb 3.6 today, lovely car. The idle sounded a tad 'ticky' for want of a better word, I was wondering if anyone here had experience of these engines to say whether this is normal or not. It seemed to have a more noticeable tick at the nearside (gearbox end) of the engine, I wondered if it might have anything to do with the timing chain or high pressure fuel pump.

Here's a little video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgVeDiH2u-E&fe...

I've had an Audi 4.2 FSI V8 before that was quite 'ticky', I was led to believe because of the injectors.

no qualifications other than previously owns an R32. That engine sounds sick to me. It sounds like a diesel.

Sounds rattly to me.

Only qualification/comparison is that I had a 3.2 VR6 in an A3 and it sounded much smoother and quieter than that and other than the slightly larger displacement, I'm assuming they're essentially the same engine so would expect them to run similarly?

Well I spent a considerable time watching youtube videos yesterday (mostly of US passats as it's so rare here) and reading comments and it seems that they all sound like that. We have a 2007 TT 3.2 in the household which does indeed sound different but all the videos of the 3.6 I can find sound like this one. Fingers crossed, hopefully it's all good.
