New disco or xc90
Discussion
I’ve got a D4 and looked at both of these to replace it. Both are good ‘cars’ but neither really impressed at all.
The D5 has too many downsides; rubbish 2.0 diesel or crankshaft snapping 3.0 diesel. A-pillar that you hit your head on every time you get in. No room for left foot in driver’s footwell. Uncomfortable in the middle row as the seats are too low. Then of course there’s the hit and miss LR reliability - some you win, some you lose. It was easier to spot downsides to the D5 as I could compare directly to the D4. I won’t even mention the looks it the lack of split tailgate.
The XC90 was just boring. Completely and utterly soulless. It also felt too low down to the point where I wondered why you’d bother with it over a V90 estate. I only drove it for an hour so didn’t have time to pick up on things that would annoy me.
On balance I’d have the D5, but mainly because I do use the off-road ability a bit and because Land Rovers do hold their value incredibly well. If you could buy a brand new D4 still I would get that! Given completely free reign (not constrained by my wife wanting to sit high up) I’d get an S6 Avant.

The Disco will be the better car the 2.0 is gutless & as mentioned the 3.0 has issues at the moment as for reliability they will be as good or bad as each other these days accountants rule so there are cheap parts in all cars, if it was me the Discovery would be my pick it's a nicer place to be & I prefer the drive (I will add I've only driven the 2.0 XC90) of the Discovery.
