Tried to chop hand off

I can only give praise to Salisbury District Hospital for stitching me back together. I was working on the roof Thursday and the circular saw i was using jumped and went straight into my under-forearm, just above the wrist. It severed my ulnar artery, tendons and nerves. I went straight over to Salisbury and was in theatre within hours. Four hours in theatre I arrived with it all sewn back together, minus a couple of small tendons which were smashed too badly.

Thanks to all up there, especially the young female surgeon.

Thank god, I opened this expecting pics and relieved to find there weren’t any.

Sounds utterly hurendous, glad it’s all sorted though.

She was very pretty, couldn't believe she was the surgeon, she looked too young.

Looks a nasty injury, glad they got you back together. My mum worked as an A&E nurse, the incident she remembers most was a butcher chopping his own hand clean off with a cleaver

some years ago i had involvement with a chappy who had self-amputated (deliberate act) 4 out of 5 digits on the L hand using a meat cleaver taken from the family restaurant. A background of learning disability with psychosis - delusional beliefs triggered the act.

AE notes simply stated "fingers arrived under separate transport"

He was chatting to a customer and slipped or loss concentration. This was back in the 70s so I doubt they’d have been able to reattach it?

I would have thought the bone etc would require a saw to go through it, apparently not.

I had my first dressing change today, thought they made a neat job of it.



The physio nurse was not very optimistic about the use of the hand in the future though due to the severing of the ulnar nerve.

You sound surprisingly ‘upbeat’ about it, compared to my morose misery when I suffered Carpal Tunnel syndrome and thought a possible numb hand was devastating.

OP - your post stitched pic, have they had to open it up more to get to other nerves / tendons?
