Is it true drug taking and alcoholism is rife on the rigs?

Bumped into a lad from Hartlepool in Cambodia who was fked from partying for two weeks.

Admitted he was the lowest of the low on the oil rigs. Earned £400 a day for cleaning/painting, anything.

Said simple management were on £1500 per day, senior management........well can't remember we all got a bit pissed after that.

Worked 6 weeks on 4 weeks off if I remember.

Any truth in that ? ( The bit about me being in Cambodia is true, I know)

I've recently transferred from a similar job at an onshore facility. The uplift is considerable considering its the same work and the same hours.

Job availability very much depends on RELEVANT skills and experience. I came through an apprenticeship scheme so it was easier for me.

House bashing sparks can put themselves through the relevant courses such as CompEx and then look to go offshore. If you want to come out as a roustabout or deck crew then as you can imagine it's a bit more hotly contested. Most you hear of know a guy who knows a guy.

Quite possibly out in Cambodia. I'm not sure on painters but plenty of techs doing project work in the UK on that money or more.

£1500 /day for management in Cambodia? Wouldn't suprise me in the slightest.

I did it for 23 years, but in oil survey ships not rigs. I retired early two years ago. It was a good job for quite a few years, but the health and safety nazis and the “more paperwork is better” knobs from the shoreside management eventually made it a pain in the neck.

Out here? Not that I've ever seen.

Back onshore? You've been stuck in a shipping container with the same 50 blokes for 2 weeks straight. Plenty of us like a drink when we get home.

You hear of drugs, but no more than any other industry.

I've known of 2 incidents of drug taking offshore. One guy openly admitted to taping pills under his balls to bring them out and one guy recently got busted on a driller we have working for us at the mo decided to leave his needles out in the room for the stewards to find. God knows how he got them past security at the air port.

Onshore senior engineers day rate working in a wells based discipline varies between 495 and about 620 , may be some higher but that would be reasonable ball park
This is North Sea rates which took a major hit in 2014 with the Oil price crash

If I were to work overtime or get stuck out here, my standard day rate is somewhere in that ball park. For reference I'm an ops tech.

It's true that health and safety is a BIG part of working out here. Lots of written procedures, work permits etc. However it just becomes part of the way you work.
At times it can be frustrating that you can't just "do you job" or "just get it done". But if you take a step back and look at what you are being paid for, why not do it the way they ask? What does it cost you? I'm here for 12hr shifts not job 'n' knock so I'll do the jobs I'm asked to in the way I'm asked to do them. Everyone's happy and I stay safe.

I'm relatively new so haven't worked in a time where all of this H&S didn't exist. I guess that makes it easier and less frustrating.

If you get hit by extreme weather, do you shut down operations and stay inside?.

Can a rig detach in a bad storm?, if so is it then evacuated?.
