Ask away! Even if you are in the RAF.

Should have put this bit on at the start:

All views are my own and not that of the RN or MOD.

All replies are my own opinion and nothing above open source level will be disclosed.

What's morale really like?

The Royal Navy conquered almost every corner of the globe and ran 1/3 of the world just 2 or 3 generations ago. Britannia truly ruled the waves. Today, it's got a couple of dinghies and budgets get slashed every other week. Do the boots on the ground (sea) feel buoyant?

Do you get WiFi on major ships?

Do you think the acquisition of the QE class has been detrimental to the fleet and the Royal Navy's future fleet?

Let’s be serious for a moment and let me answer this. I have just joined a P2/P3 training establishment where I was led to believe morale was in the gutter. I do a lot of walking around (walking the patch as it is phrased) and can definitely state morale is buoyant. As I walk about, the troops are chipper, smiling and enthusiastic. Far better than say ten years ago.

We suffer from financial cut backs as any business does, and we are asked to consider financial implications with every decision we make. However the financial implications are not at the forefront of those decisions at ground level. The commissioning of the QLZ is a significant moment this year, and has restored excitement back into the lower deck especially, but also within the upper deck. We still lose people voluntarily but we look at the reasons these guys leave and look at taking steps to remedy that if we can.

I am coming to the end of my time, and for one would relish being given more time to serve on QLZ, even as an aging middle aged bloke. Would I recommend the service to Youngsters? Damn right I would. A career full of friends to keep, and stories to tell. It is a great place to be.

As we don’t have an equivalent to ‘’Thank you for your service’, I’ll just say, ‘Cheers for doing what you do, yeah’.
