Does anyone do one with a thinnish probe?

I'm a convert to using them but the one I've been using for the last couple of years is very far from "technical" having come included in some cheapo turkey cooking kit my folks bought me a long time ago. And the probe is probably 5-6mm across, which leaves a bit of a hole on the meat.

I keep forgetting to look for something better, so after a great rib of beef tonight (the cheapo work well enough smile) I thought I'd ask the gurus on here for recommendations.

Thermapen are reckoned to be amongst the best.

I've got a Thermapen 3, but they've since brought out a version 4 which is faster, but no more accurate (I think). They often have deals through their eBay shop (etiltd).

I've found the digital oven temperature thermometer from Eti to be very good. And you can buy a 1.6mm diameter probe.

My Lakeland one has never left a noticeable hole in anything I've cooked.

It's maybe 3mm at the pointy end.

Thermapen for instant reading, you can pick up a Thermapen 3 on Amazon for £30.

For one to leave in the meat whilst it's in the oven I've had one of these for couple of years now, works well for the price, simple operation too.

Does that allow you to set the temperature and set off an alarm when its reached?

I've got one of those, for the money it's brilliant and yes it does sound an alarm when the meat has reached the set temperature.

What's the diameter of the probe?

Presumably the cable just traps in the door...?

(It's a "leave in" job I'm after).

I'm not at home but at a guess 3mm, yes the cable comes out of the door, there is a magnet on the unit so that it can attach to the oven somewhere.

I had one of these (or at least an identical looking one) and it didn't survive more than a few uses. Is the one above proven?

I tend to rely on a normal probe, just pop the joint out, check all over and put back if necessary.

Been through several digital thermometers which didn't last long and you can't get replacement probes for the cheap ones so you'd have to buy the whole thing again if the cable or probe breaks.

In the end, got an ETI Therma which you can connect several types of thermocouple to, including thin probes suitable for leaving in and it's never let me down. I realise most people won't want to spend this sort of money, but it's the last thermometer I'll ever buy.

Agree on ETI kit. It's what I spec for work stuff. For home I use the cheaper thermapen clones which last me a few years.

As I said mate had it for a while, probably used a few times a week. For the price its cheap enough to replace if it goes tits up.

Use it on the bbq too, usually have the Aldi wireless one reading the grill temp and this one in the meat.
