Having waded through the forum i am starting to get a definitive list of 'problems' with T350's and Tamoras (the 2 cars i am prob going to buy). One of the main problems i read about is condensation in the light units.

So my question is a simple one. how easy it to remove the front and rear light units?

I ask, becasue from my years 'modding' cars, i know of a way to ensure the lights are sealed fully and would like to perform the task when(if) i take delivery of my used car, if this is an easy job that doesnt entail going to a stealership.

I think it's relatively easy, if you're good with the silicon sealant. Mine's due to be done under warranty soon...

Both my fronts are being done as we speak, but beware when removing old covers. When the dealer removed my drivers side cover it was stuck on so good in one place that the cover cracked in two. When they finally got the remaining piece off it brought some of the paint wth it, result, front end respray!!!!

From what I know they have been refitted before, not very good by what i've seen.

Hilti.

Shouldn't be too tricky, and you probably won't make a worse job of this than the guys at TVR (sorry, TVR, you're particularly crap at this - for £40k I want proper sealed light units).

The other thing you have to watch is that you don't remove some paint when you're removing the covers. Both my rears needed repainting around the light cluster area after removing the sealant/cover.

Thanks for teh replies guys.

From what i read i guess they aren't solid units, but instead of the the 'covers' are connected to the cars body?

cheers

On a related subject.... was up at Silverstone TVR today and they've just completed their "Tamora SP" which has a few special bits added - mostly bodywork.

The best part about it IMO is the light conversion - no photos I'm afraid but it's similar style to the T350 units with two lamps set inside a faired cover which is the same size as the original.

Brings the front of the Tamora bang up to date - lovely.

That sounds very interesting, especially as the cowel remains the same, wonder how much that conversion would be!

Need to get a look at those lamps, it's the only thing that lets the Tam down, would bring the front bang up to date.

Any idea's how much they will cost?

Matt said the whole "SP" mod was likely to be around £900 and that includes a substantial piece of work on the front spoiler, rear pipes and heat shield, and some minor trickery with TVR badges and side indicators. My guess (and it is a guess!) is the lights conversion would be in the region of £250-£350 but if anyone's interested call Steve or Matt and ask (and don't forget to say Don sent you so I stay on their Xmas card list )

Regards to removing the perspex covers. Using a length of fishing line with an handle either end is a safe way to slice through the silicone without damaging the paintwork, obviously you would need to make an initial inroad with somthink sharp

£300 or there abouts seems quite reasonable, more if you wanted those gas discharge lamp things though, I bet, Am happy with my rear pipes and I certainly don't want that over-exagerated front spoiler (wouldn't last 10 miles in the real world, or, at least where I live!)

You can get at the lights by removing the panel inside the wheel arch, You might(or might not) be surprised at the mess you find inside, I had to clean mine up because they had filled with grit after following a gritting truck on the M25 for a few miles.
I found that two of the Three lights had come unstuck, there is a vague attempt to stick them in with polyester bonding paste, Two blobs the size of pea's were used, this is why the grit got in!!
So there should be no need to remove the outer covers,
I did find that a compressed air line helped, and a smaller diameter host fitted to my Henry Hoover got most of the dust out,
Dave
Ps, go careful when removing the rear lights from inside, as you will most probably cut your pinkies to shreds, plus the splinters!!
