I came upon a 3.9 Land Rover engine for cheap.
Other than the CR being 8.18.1 versus the 9.75 on the TVR, what else is different ? It was driving an automatic not a manual.

Not a lot else different, but I stand to be corrected on that.
The 3.9 in both my TVR and range rover are "pre serp" but if the land rover engine is newer it may have a serpentine front end.

The engine in the 390SE was a bored out 3.5 with special pistons, different cam and head work - specs will differ as three different engine tuners were involved in producing these engines.

Were the 3.5’s modified or are they stock Rover?

Stock Rover - same spec as the SD1 Vitesse with ECU mod'd (allegedly...). Rover cast manifolds on the Series 1 and TVR tubular steel on the Series 2.

With that low CR you could stick a supercharget on it no problems....

I bought a 400Se to 'do up' needing a fair bit of work and shortly after purchased another as it needed less work and was almost identical but in better condition. The first 400 went OK but the second went like a rocket in comparison. Only after looking through the details did I become ware the second was the big valve version with the quoted 275 BHP. The first was in my opinion the standard 220 BHP? Rrover Vittesse based engine. Both cars were almost the same date production so as I understand it the tuned version was produced from an Andy Rouse version used in the earlier 390 Tasmins.by NCK {North Coventry Kawasaki?). I hope this is of help.
