What science, exactly? And what is your area of expertise/research and what did you do for PhD/DPhil.
Oh and which bits did you hate the most? Was it grant applications? Go on, it was. Worse than dealing with non academic "support staff".
Oh and last question. What really gets under your skin? Armchair scientists, bad journalism/use of science in adverts or people who roll their eyes and say 'we've had enough of experts' as though they know better, then they walk in to a lamp post/in front of a bus/open manhole cover.

don't want to mention the specific science Oh and which bits did you hate the most? Was it grant applications? Go on, it was. Worse than dealing with non academic "support staff".

let's say, experimental physical science. 10 lectures, tutorials, practical labs, various other marking, exams too, etc. etc.
so no, more than 10 hours a year.
What do I hate most? the inertia of a university and the small mindedness of (many, but not all) colleagues.
grant applications? no issue with them, really, apart from all the pointless, irrelevant 'national importance' s
te. admin staff are generally fine to deal with, most of them are enabling. what annoys me most? People trying to direct or prioritise funding certain areas or technologies. the idea that 'innovation' and 'application' are what universities should be doing. The idea that 'economic importance' is a good criterion to decide what gets funding. the route to the biggest improvements in everybody's lives is, and always has been, fundamental science. you can't predict outcomes, but you never know what you are going to find and what the implications are.

Why can’t I get any traction with an essay I have to do for my MA!
writing is really hard. first of all, you have to work out what you want to say. that's sometimes even harder. best thing is just to do a small amount (1-3 hrs) at the same time every day. even if you only write one sentence.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
