PSVR - Shipping lens cover removal?

I have just got a new PSVR unit and having read the getting started guide, there is mention of removing the lens protective covers before use.

I have examined the lens and the lens feels plastic-like, as if there is a plastic film over the lens, but there is no edge to be picked off, or a tag to pull at.

So, is there a shipping lens cover on the psvr, or am I picking away at the actual lens? Is the lens glass-like, as you would expect on a pair of spectacles, or are the lenses cheap and plastic feeling?

IIRC mine had blue/green tinted plastic on the two eyepieces which had to be removed.
