Hubby wants a project

I admit I know very little about cars in any way shape or form so popped along here to pick the brain of you fine folk.
My hubby wants a project. I don’t mind but would rather this “project” not turn into a money pit. He has his eye on a 54 Nissan X-Trail. It’s a 54 Plate with only 70,000 on the clock. Sounds fine but needs a new head gasket. It’s only £750 but I think he’s stark raving mad. Please tell me I’m right!
He knows his way around under a bonnet but I think this could be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to issues with this vehicle.
