Currently in a 60 plate golf Gtd, standard with 91k on the clock and starting to think about my next used Golf.

I got the GTD a couple of years old with about 30k on the clock and not had one thing go wrong along the way. I plan on running her until at least 100/110k.

When I purchased the Gtd I was heavier on the miles but not so anymore hence no question I am after a Gti.

Does anyone have any experience going from Gtd to Gti? Traction pulling off any better or worse?

Will I feel the power upgrade of the Gti vs the Gtd? Worth thinking performance pack?

I prefer the idea of owning a gti but dare I say it, will be test driving a couple of Gti’s and the R.

As I will be buying used, similar to my original Gtd purchase in terms of age and miles, any major advantages or disadvantages gti vs R in terms of used car risk? (Trying to avoid the gti vs r debate)

Cheers!

If it helps I'm currently running a new TT with the 230PS 2.0 TFSI unit borrowed from the Mk7 GTI PP. I've swapped cars quite a bit and for comparison previously had a 2015 Mk7 GTD, 2011 Mk6 2.0 TDI and 2006 Mk5 GTI.

I've been impressed so far, it seems economical enough averaging 35mpg overall and 40mpg achievable on the motorway. The performance is definitely better but you have to push it harder, whereas the GTD has it's power lower down the rev range. Also I used to find the GTD appalling for traction but the FWD TT seems to be much grippier.

The DSG box is nice and makes the cars easier to drive, but I've gone Manual this time which is more fun and involving.

The R is a seriously impressive car and I've been quite tempted on a few occasions. But it's a bit weighty and does cost more, so depends what the priorities are really.

The difference between a MK6 GTD and MK7 GTI is night and day, both in terms of how the car is to drive and the performance on offer, but also the quality of the interior and the technology the car has. I personally wouldn't place too much importance on having the performance pack, the power increase is negligible, and the LSD doesn't really factor in normal road use. Bigger brakes are nice to have, but not essential.
