Just got my NIP for a 1.3 second traffic light violation on the Leicester ring road.

Fosse Park, dark, rush hour, following a tanker so blind sided partly by it's bulk, just saw the orange to one side as I crossed, tanker then slowed mid crossing, effectively leaving me stranded mid junction, though not stopped. I accept it's my responsibility to make sure my exit is clear before crossing, so following the tanker in nose to tail traffic is probably no excuse.

Anyone got any experience/success in sending a 'mitigating circumstance' letter given the dark, blocked vision, rush hour nose to tail traffic circumstances, and the 1.3 second infringement, or am I wasting my time? Tolerance before points / court is 2.99 seconds.

It's a fine and course if I can't argue successfully, not the end of the world, but feeling marginally hard done by.

Traffic light cameras do not activate on amber, only on red, and after a short delay at that. Also, the sensors are embedded into the road surface adjacent to the stop line, not in the middle of the junction.

Could your recollection of events be a little off ?

Either way, it'll be a course (if available / offered) or a £100 fixed penalty and 3 points.

You're right, they activate around 1-2 seconds after the red.

Being brutally honest I don't think you have any mitigating circumstances, the infringement is 1.3 seconds after it turned red, so you must have triggered the sensors whilst on red not amber as you say, not that it helps but that is a stty roundabout with stupid lane markings and badly synced lights.

Thanks, those replies are all I need, I can readily accept that it was a timing issue by the time I looked to the side and then to the back of the tanker to avoid collision,
Hey ho, off to a course for me! Thanks for your help.

No, unless there is a yellow box, you only have to avoid (any part of your vehicle) crossing the stop line on red (I'm ignoring yellow lights for the moment). But if your vehicle continued over the stop line on a red signal, you're probably bang to rights.

Cheers, always worth looking at the possibilities, but I now face my failings with open wallet and a couple of bruises from kicking myself!

As others have said, the sensors and offence are for crossing the white line, not being stuck in the junction (only a problem with yellow boxes)

At least you completed crossing the junction, I saw a car at the weekend get flashed for crossing the white line, but then stop before the junction. I wonder if they could appeal any fines.

The offence would have been complete. No point in stopping afterwards, except maybe to create an obstruction?

They stopped before the junction so didn't cause an obstruction. I imagine the red light nip will be a shock to them in the post

I hope it’ll teach them (and possibly you) what a stop line means.
