Nikon 70-300 lens - AF not working

The auto focus on my Nikon 70-300 lens does not settle into focus anymore, so I suspect that bit of the lens is not working. Can anybody out there suggest where I should send it to be checked out and how much it might cost? The lens hasn't been dropped or anything, it just appears to struggle to find focus. Thank you in advance for any advice and/or suggestions.

The camera isn't in AF-C rather than AF-S is it?
