Is it still the thing to do to swap RFT for normal tyres?

I've just picked up an F32 420d with 19" RFT and the car generates a fair bit of road noise on some surfaces but I'm not sure if that is purely due to the tyres?

Runflats do transmit more noise, road imperfections and tramline more than non-runflat tyres.

The gap isn't as big as it used to be though, so might be worth trying one without runflats to see if it's worth the swap for you.

I am not surprised that 19" rims are noisy. For 3 and 4 Series, I'd not normally go above 18" unless it's a performance model and even then, only if you're happy to degrade the ride and get more noise in return for sharper handling. I had 17" on my 330d and was happy with that but did feel 18" would have been the optimum.

As I've said elsewhere, people often report improvement when swapping one manufacturer's runflats for a completely different manufacturer's non-runflats. They may also change the wheel and tyre sizes too. This makes it impossible to know for sure how much of any (certainly genuine) improvement comes from which element - 'runflatness', a different tyre model, a change in wheel size, a different tyre size, or a combination of all these.

I ditched my 18" run flats and the difference was amazing. Soooo much quieter, softer and less tram lining now! Just get an amazon compressor for your boot......job done biggrin
