I passed two Range Rovers on the M42 today. They were both fully striped up and from a dsitance looked like TrafPol vehicles. It wasn't until I got a bit closer that I noticed "Highways Agency" on the rear bumpers.

Does anybody know what purpose these vehicles and the drivers serve? Do they have any legal powers / jurisdiction in policing the roads? and what is the purpose of making them look like TrafPol vehicles?.

These are Highway Agency Traffic Officers.

Lots of discussion on these before and if you follow the threads below you'll see I'm not impressed with their remit nor performance.

Policing on the cheap, well theoretically on the cheap, in practice .....

Just to confirm then as as passed a few recently. They have powers of stop but they can't do you for speeding. However can't two witnesses do you for driving offences?

ie If I were to bomb past a HATO at a ton What would they do?

And What are they allowed to do?

Many thanks. I obviously have not been paying attention.

Now I understand, so it was OK to drive past them at 100mph whilst giving them the coffee been shake.

I bomb past the HATO's all the time at 90mph just to show the numpties there is no need to do 65mph.

They have no powers to stop drivers for speeding

They are awful. I went past an RTA on the M1 the other day that these chappies were "dealing with". It appeared somone had aquaplaned into the central reservation. Rather than put a lane 3 closure on and shelter the vehicle, they simply parked on the hard shoulder, merrily distracting other drivers and doing nothing at all, as far as I could see.

I see them as the CSO eqivalent of Roads Policing...
