Hi all!

I do 20,000 miles or just over a year, which is a new experience for me since moving areas and jobs.

I have an old banger I use for work and a 2 year old Golf GTI but ideally would like to go down to 1 car. I know the Golf can be used everyday with ease but it is a bit thirsty and only gets reasonable economy on a long motorway cruise. Also it's on a PCP deal of 10k a year (I got it before my change in circumstances).

Should I now consider swapping or buying a diesel based on the above? I like having a car that's fun to drive and reasonably quick like the Golf, but not sure a diesel can do the fun bit for me! My old banger is going to die soon and although its an option I don't want to keep buying one every 12 months as I not really got the money to do that.

I did 25,000 miles in my BMW 430D last year and I have decided life is too short for a diesel so I am getting an M4 next. To hang with the petrol costs.

If you spent the money you spend on the banger (Tax, Insurance, Maintenance) on fuel for the Golf it's probably an extra say £800-1000 a year for fuel... enough to take a 35mpg Golf 5400-6750 miles. If I was in your position I'd dump the banger, learn to anticipate to get more MPG from the Golf and negotiate the extra mileage on your PCP too. Not because I hate Diesel (I don't), but because it doesn't make financial sense to spend far more than £1000 extra on changing the car.

Are you expensed for your fuel usage?

£500 a month on fuel (or around £10,000 a year of your gross salary if you're on the 40% band) wears thin very quickly....

And thats before depreciation and running costs - servicing, tyres, etc...

The expression 'the cheapest car to own is the one you already have' comes to mind.

Buy a Golf GTD then, best of both worlds?

I'd get something quick, petrol, 2.0 - 3.0 on an 8 speed. Sat in 8th you'll do a good amount to the gallon anyway. An enjoyable 40mpg is better than a dull 50mpg, especially when you're paying for the car.

Assuming it's mostly motorway work, the Golf should give, what, 40mpg? vs about 70mpg for a good diesel. Per year, that's around 2250 litres of fuel in the Golf vs 1250 in the diesel; so a saving of about £1200 at current fuel prices. Probably not enough to justify changing?

Can't even order a Golf GTE at mo due to such high demand and waiting times!

Electric or plug in hybrid not really convenient for me as can't charge it where I live. I like the idea but need to move house first!

I'd say get yourself one of these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Held-Cover-Professional...

It drives very well (it should do it's basically an RS with a diesel engine) u can keep it for 2/3 years then move onto something else.

Are you doing 20k+ without most of that being motorway cruise? If so you have my sympathies!!!

Check your PCP terms, the PCP might not be an issue if you pay the balloon at the end anyway.

No expenses for fuel use as I am self employed. I ran a Lexus ISF for 85k miles so not bothered about fuel tbf, just buy cars as cheap as possible and get out after a year.

An M4 also has lumbar support which my car doesn't and that is also very appealing right now. My last two cars have been diesel and I really am starting to hate it. It is fine in my Mercedes ML but other than a big SUV I don't want it in my daily.

My commute to work is B roads and motorway, would say around 50/50. It's 25 miles from home to work so 50 miles a day. I know that's way less than 20,000 a year but I often have overtime to do and we tend to go back to my hometown at least once a month which is 300 miles roundtrip plus visit friends a bit further out.
