If this comes as forecast, where I live ( Toronto ) will hit -40F. This is an unheard of temperature on this region. I would think that this whole system will cause chaos. Supposed to be catching a flight Monday, but no idea how bad this sucker is going to be. Have not seen the like of it before.......

Could be worse, imagine if it was -40°c!

North American weather is truly deranged pretty much wherever you go. I couldnae imagine what the UK would do with -40. Roll over and cark it most likely.

I've experienced temps around -30°c (-22°F) and for those of you who haven't, it's really not as bad as you'd imagine. Just do everything appropriately; dress, drive, communicate.

My weather app is showing -20 C min for this week with much warmer weather over the weekend and into next week for Toronto. I'm pretty sure you won't be seeing -40 C/F in Toronto.

I was in NYC one January, mid eighties I think, I was in my then girlfriend’s apartment on W 21st St., and had arranged to meet her in a bar on W27th.
It was cold, and the radio kept saying that it was 7 or maybe 8, (Fahrenheit), and not to go out without wearing ear defenders.
I had two thoughts, 1), WTF were ear defenders? Turned out to be ear muffs, and 2), I’m from Bermondsey, if I’m going out for a drink, a bit of cold ain’t stopping me!
I walked the six blocks to W 27th, and felt the snot up my nose beginning to gel.
When I walked into the bar, and looked across at the mirror, my ears were the colour of Rudolph’s nose.

Hmm, meant to be in New York next week. may have to delay. -29 C doesn't sound like fun.

I think my coldest was about -25 in Poland one winter. The exposed bits of skin started to hurt after about 60 seconds. The covered bits were fine though. I think it's the dealing with it week in and week out that would really grind you down in the end. A brief spurt of it is quite a thrill.

-42 C in Lapland a few years back before factoring in the wind chill.

That was at the bottom of the run we were walking up to get some sights of the Northern Lights.

Port froze in my backpack, Brandy was like syrup.

We were nice and toasty except that you have about 30 seconds to get your glove off, cigarette lit and glove back on again before it got too cold to think about it. Got a little bit of frostbite on my nose but nothing to write home about.

Speaking to the locals even they were a little surprised that it was quite that cold. One said that her 60+ Year old log cabin sounded like little bombs going off all night as the wood cracked and so on. She had lived there many years and not had it quite as cold.

As ever though it is a question of having the right clothes and adapting to your surroundings. It's a disaster in the UK as we get about 3 days of snow a year and minus 10 is considered very unusual. In Lapland minus 10 is your average Sunday for at least a quarter of the year so things are designed to be able to cope much better. Would have expected most Northern Americans to be able to cope for a week with a little forethought without having to drag out the Home Guard.

Customer in Edmonton specified -40C for their equipment.
We complained Calgary Spec was only -35C.
Edmonton said "yes but they get it easy".
Flew to Calgary for a meeting and then drove up to Edmonton.
The previous day they had reported over 1200 road vehicle accidents due to a white out on that same freeway.
I saw dozens of cars and trucks on their side or upside down on the way up.

Temp in Edmonton was -38C. OK we said -40 is good.

I've experienced -37 c and it was nothing short of awful.

Having shocking circulation in my feet was not helpful even with proper stuff on..after a few hours I wanted to cry....
