I was out this afternoon and several times, people coming the other way, pedestrians and cyclists all gestured at me to slow down. I wouldn't mind, but the last occasion I was doing 40 in a 60 limit !
All I can put it down to is the noise (964, cat + primary bypass), then greeted by a guards red porsche. It's just too much for some folks !!

Has anyone else had this ? Theories most welcomed.

Craig, it really goes with the territory, whether Porsches are moving or are stationary some people think they are speeding.

Just wave back and say 'Speed up!'

My theory:

They are numpties of the highest order. Just change down with a nice blip and gun it. You'll never please them, so just content yourself with annoying them instead

The reaction from the guys at trackdays with the noise meters is to send loud Porsches home!

That is why I prefer to keep mine as quiet as possible.

I don't think it's particularly the noise, it appears to be a typical reaction towards Porsches. I tend to trickle through local villages at well under the speed limit but it doesn't stop the residents looking and pointing at me as if I ws the Devil incarnate.

The most common reaction I have experienced from other road users is to baulk my progress by taking up two lanes, closing up to the car in front so I can't overtake one by one and similar diliberately obstructive behaviour.

Like some body else said "it goes with the territory".

When I had the Fabspeed Supercups on my 993, it was very very very LOUD. Absolutely mental for a road car, IMO.

As to people's reaction... actually got a hell of a lot of positive 'respect' style attention from the Nova-boy brigade, whether this is a good thing is a matter of opinion

As to the blocking / not letting out of junctions / etc. I don't really have a problem with this. Perhaps it's cos I'm a really nice bloke or perhaps a 10 year old Porsche isn't really look-how-rich-I-am any more. It also helps it's the most beautiful car ever made

So true.

By the way, buy a 993TT. It's very quiet (must be the turbos).

Oi! Leave me alone VS. I'm trying to stick with one car for a few years rather than lose thousands chopping and changing.... the plan is to continually develop my current car rather than fall in love with a TT... damn I'm fickle with cars

I reckon this summer with the 9m intercooler I may be able to push 380 bhp tops (hopefully Colin will be able to squeeze this using a wizard map). Not up to Turbo standard, but equally the torque should be available lower down. Ultimate development power will be much easier and cheaper for a Turbo but I went right off the turbo torque delivery after a couple of Scoobies and a Noble M12.

This will still be on the original compression so no loss of low-down torque or throttle response - if I want more I'd expect to need a drop in compression, and this may be a different story re: drivability.

(and no, I wouldn't buy the TT because it's 'quiet'... and neither did you, did ya? )

Larrf, yep, get the same in my Westfield...Vx engines revving to 9000 through a 4-1 manifold and straight into a Techcraft "silencer"....on the road, tends to get peoples back up (shaaaame) ...."OK" I say..."I'll lift off"....they then moan about the 2ft flame that pops out of the exhaust!...Don't think they'd mind too much if the exhaust wasn't on the footpath side, but when their furry dogs start smauldering, they tend to hate it even more! ...personally, I can't see what the prob is!

Seriously though, I do respect speed limits, but people do use ears and not eyes to judge speed, goes with territory.

A turbo does muffle things. But then the shape of a 911T makes up for it in the perception stakes, and if you do similar tricks to the pipework it can still be nice and rorty.

Had a similar experience to this thread when approaching some STOP/GO controlled roadworks on a decent stretch of nsl sc ... having seen this from a long way back, I'd slowed from unspecified leptons down to 20mph way back and crawled up, but still had the bloke on the 'GO' pole flagging me down. No argument from me though, I know the car looks like it's doing 100mph standing still

as for thinking your going faster than you are.One guy the other day turned almost purlple franticly waving his arms around at me. A first I thought shit this guy needs help he's been attacked needs the police or something. WAs going to come to a full stop and ask him if he needed help then he started doing a slow down gesture. Prick I was doing around 25

Turbos do muffle things unfortunately, and this was my biggest misgiving before buying the 993TT beast- coming from the divine burbly sounding 928.
However little did I know that my car was to have Twin Gemballa sport pipes fitted.
My GOD- are they worth it!
Incredible sound, drowns out the 911 clatter and whines completely. It sounds very similar to the 1980s racing 956s and 962s! It even picks up the popping from the over fueling on the over run!
I have to concede however that my 1970s E21 BMW 323i sounds way better though- as it sings and rasps-but alot of that is my doing. Imagine what I could do if I turned my attention to my 993.

Give it heaps! I always give mine a boot a block away from home so the dog can arrange his welcoming party.
Does anyone else feel a bit guilty about the trail of car alarms they leave in their wake in multi-story car parks?

one should not criticise the tiger for having sharp teeth...

your 911 is neither too loud nor too quiet, it is simply as it should be

ps. I really need to go home now

More guilty about every car down the road doing the same party piece...one medium distance neighbour even commented that he knows when the 911T has started up as his dining room mirror vibrates against the wall...fortunately he's a petrolhead and appreciates the alarm call
