What LED Road Signs SHOULD Remind Drivers...
Discussion
In the U.S., particularly in New York where I am from, over the last 2 years or so large LED road signs have been placed at various points throughout our highways. Being LED they can be programmed to convey various messages. For example, as Xmas and New Years approached they flashed the very important message to remind all drivers not only to BUCKLE UP, ITS THE LAW but also to remind us DRIVE SOBER; DRIVING DRUNK IS AGAINST THE LAW.... And DONT TEXT AND DRIVE, ITS AGAINST THE LAW...
NO s
t I think to myself every time I pass one of these signs. I think, do they believe people are so inept that we must all be reminded on a daily basis on our commute to and from work that driving under the influence is a bad idea and breaking the law!?!
And it is not as if it is one or two of these very large and presumably expensive signs, no, I travel nearly 80 to 100 miles a day and traverse 3 to 4 different interstates/routes etc and the signs are permanently (majority of them any way are permanent) affixed as well as found generously throughout.
My whole qualm with the messages they convey is obvious I am sure to people such as us who frequent PH. And my main thing about the messages is this; instead of flashing obvious bulls
t that any rational adult would know i.e. to buckle up, I have a MUCH better and MUCH MORE APPROPRIATE message to be flashing to drivers. In fact, I believe so deeply in the following message that it should be lit up in G'DAMN NEON LIGHTS to ENSURE 100% that every MORON DIMWIT ASSHOLE understands a VERY simple G'DAM RULE OF THE ROAD, and I am certain my fellow U.S./N.Y. drivers will agree with me,....
MERGE ONTO FREEWAY AT APPROPRIATE/MATCHING SPEED OF TRAFFIC
and, wait for it....
THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE RIGHT LANE IS FOR DRIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you havent figured it out yet, this topic is for me to vent at the UNBELIEVABLE stupidity of driver's that populate/congest the roads I use daily. Sometimes I just have to vent and let out pent up frustration and rage because if I end up doing so while driving I swear I am liable to ram a few of these left lane 20mph below the speed limit, either purposely not caring as self centered pricks or totally oblivious and thus stupid as all s
t to the line of cars behind them honking and flashing their lights and giving the moron dips
t SOB loser hand gestures to SIMPLY MOVE THE HELL OVER into the correct lane!!! Do 40mph in a 65mph zone in the right lane if you cant handle that whopping speed!!!
Why on earth are there SO MANY completely clueless dips
ts who insist on IMMEDIATELY getting over into thr left lane the SECOND they merge onto the freeway? What is so comforting about the left lane that they feel more at ease there than in the right lane, the CORRECT lane!?!
I dont get it. But I am telling you, THAT is the ONLY damn message that should be shown on those LED signs.
The only use I have ever gotten from one of those signs is when they send a signal out live time changing the current message to one that gives live up to date traffic/accident information.
Do you folks have an abundance of such similar road signs on your side of the pond? And do they try and remind the public of such obvious and assinine things such as ITS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE DRUNK.... derrrrrr, really!?! Oh geez county, thank you so much for telling me, because boy oh boy now that I think of it, I am definitely smashed drunk out of my skull and I was just on my way to picking my boys up at little league practice!! Oh whats that?? Buckle up, its the law now??? Oh boy, saved me again county!!!! thanks fellas!!! Id havr NEVER known if yoy hadnt reminded me!!

And once again PH reverts to default of utter onanists trying to be first in belittling the OP. Give the guy a f
king break you t
ts.
Numerous threads on here about middle and outer lane hoggers. Many similar cathartic rants every f
king month. Accept it for what it is and comment sensibly.
In answer to the OP, yes we do have very expensive signs telling drivers obvious messages. We even have a few, too few imo, telling people to keep left except when overtaking. We even have some signs that are completely incomprehensible. Government wasting your taxes.
As regards the lane hog messages, they appear to be ineffective.

The only way the messages will be taken seriously is if the signs can target the offender. "you in the blue Merc, use the inside lane you twonk"Telling of a jam a few miles ahead is good, telling me after I have joined a jam that has been there for some time is not good. There seems to be no effective and joined up control of an expensive installation.
Telling me it is raining is a waste. With the OP on that. Here in Wales we get the advisory 50 at the slightest hint of wind or rain. We get compulsory 50 eight miles ahead of temporary works. People tend to ignore them.
i LIke the smiley men speed reminders.
Yes and putting stupid signs on the M40 at Uxbtridge tht the M4 is closed at Bristol, or the M3 is closed at Southampton..When in fact the M25/M3 junction is still shut over night for roadworks, and a stupid diversion is involved
OR even more braindead.
NOT advising motorists on the A316 that the M£ is closed from Juct 2.
FFS let us know at the A316 so we can do a bimble down the M4/A34

To the OP, yes many would fully agree with you and question why is it that driving standards both in the USA and the UK have the perception of falling way below acceptable by many.
I would say that much of the fall of standards (in the UK at least), is due to two main reasons (with many other reasons that would make my reply way too long to read).
Firstly, lack of traffic police. Pressure groups that lobby government to tackle nothing more than traffic speed have resulted in a detrimental effect on road policing. Traffic police numbers (also due to government spending), have reduced and have been replaced by speed cameras - as it has wrongly been assumed by local authorities that the only causal factor in accidents is 'speed'.
The removal of traffic police numbers have allowed the general public to have a total lack of concern about the consequences of their actions on the roads. As long as they don't 'speed' past a camera then they have little worries.
Secondly, a generation of people driving who think that they are not to blame and can do no wrong. Its always someone else's fault. I presume over time this turns them in to a driver that basically couldn't care less about others on the roads and also the highway code. Its me me me, constantly.

I think that when it is raining or foggy they should put a sign up saying so. Same for wind.
Hang on, they already do.
Of which I am not a particular fan ofHang on, they already do.
Any hint of fog in the UK leads a load of drivers to put the fog lights on, when in reality, visibility in my experience most of the time it has been 'foggy' is still usually 1/2 mile plus.
It annoys me way more than it should, because you just know the fog lights are left on for the entire remainder of their journey, no matter what the conditions.

You know what it is, some pencil pusher said we spent millions on this, tell them the bleeding obvious to justify the expense.

And (on Friday) not telling people heading down the M40 that there were long delays on the M25 near Clackett's Lane (as they could have swung north around the M25 instead).Yes and putting stupid signs on the M40 at Uxbtridge tht the M4 is closed at Bristol, or the M3 is closed at Southampton..When in fact the M25/M3 junction is still shut over night for roadworks, and a stupid diversion is involved

The ones I find helpful are the time to junction notices. I know, for example, that if I am approaching M4 J8/9 WB in the evening and time to J10 is in the double digits, it is probably better for me to go down the A4 to get home. "Queue After Junction" doubly so.
That sort of notice is only useful to locals. If they also show the distance in addition to the time you can work out average speed.Though judging by the numptyism and inability to do mental arithmetic regularly seen one wonders if those messages are wasted on many.
I forgot to add that the signs are on occasion used for something meaningful i.e. when a kidnapping or missing child/adult prompts authorities to initiate what is called am Amber Alert, named after a child some years back that went missing/kidnapped. The sign will have useful info such as a description of the person, and or the year, make and model of a car wanted as a suspect in said missing persons case.
THAT, such system IS INDEED useful. And obviously doesnt require common sense, not a shred of it whatsoever.
Which reminds me - over the summer i found a park and i began to bring my dog there a gew days a week. Upon exploring the park I came across perhaps the most assinine, dimwitted bulls
t that imo surpasses the useless messages on thr LED signs...
Ready for this s
t?
Posted around th perimeter of the playground (which i have to tell you was exremely impressive and blew away any playground/jungle gym I ever had growing up) were various colorful signs with painted cartoon characters to of course appeal to the children and hook the parents into reading the signs, which say...
HOW TO TALK WITH YOUR CHILDREN and COMMUNICATE. Followed by a friggen suggestions chart giving parenting tips such as;
Sing a song with your child as you push them on the swing. Or, gather leaves of different colors snd make a collage at home together.
Have a stroll through our mini-nature walk trail and discover local wildlife and insects.
There were others that were even more ridiculous but i cant remember. I actually thought almost immediately that I must take pictures of these signs and show them on PHead. I did take the pictures but for some reason i cant find them in my gallery.
I am speechless at such things like that, i really am. Whoever proposed AND passed such nonsense must truly have no faith in the intelligence of its towns occupants. What other conclusion is there?
It would be different if the sign simply made suggestions as to what attractions might be suitable for X age of child versus an older child, etc
