BMW 320d Gearbox bearing?

Hi all,
Just dropped my2010 BMW 320d off at the garage as there seems to be an annoying whining coming from it.
At first it was possibly a wheel bearing but now the noise is becoming more apparent its possible its the gearbox!!
Any ideas on costs to repair this? Is a recon gearbox needed or just bearings that need replacing?
Should I do anything else whilst its being done?

Issues with beaings is a common-ish issue on older honda civics - my brothre just had some bearings replaced on his. I dont know if it was the inut or output shaft bearing, but it made the noise go away.
Other things while the box is out - obviously, it's going to have fresh transmission fluid, so tat;s good. Its worth inspecting the clutch and also inspecing the dual-mass flywheel; there is actually a procedure to "measure" the amount of wear (I dont know who do the BMW DMF's, but LUX describe the procedure in their youtube videos so it could be similar).

Surely, the answer that matters is the one from the experts who have seen the vehicle and know what the problem is and decided how to fix it and what that will cost you - and you've already started the process of getting that. Is there any point trying to prejudge that with opinions from the peanut gallery?Any ideas on costs to repair this?

I would put money on it being the diff. E90 series 3 series use ball bearings in the diff instead of the more usual taper rollers, and they don't last. My 130i makes a constant whistle above 20mph you can hear with the windows open and is now starting to drone on the M way so will be rebuilt soon. Once mine started doing it I now hear it everywhere - almost every day I'll hear the whistling noise from a 1 series or 3 series as they drive past. Rebuild will be about 500 quid.

Thanks Sixpistons.Funny you should say that. The first garage said gearbox without doubt.
Just been to a gearbox centre and been for drive with the mechanic and he said 100% its the rear diff. He quoted £750+vat for a rebuild?

Your quote sounds a little on the expensive side but the bearings are quite expensive you want someone who know what they're doing. Still worth shopping round a bit though.
For reference I think I paid about 400 quid to fit the Quaife ATB diff in mine (7 hours labour) - basically a full diff rebuild, but I reused the original bearings as at the time the diff was quiet and I was being a cheapskate. Lesson learned as I'm going to end up paying that twice.
