It's a minefield trying to decide, there's just so many! If anyone does any searching you seem to get 'LG' tv's rammed down your throat in this price bracket, but I've had two LG products, a tv and a phone, both useless/broken after a year or so use.
So tv preferably needs to be 43 to 50 inch, a smart uhd 4k obviously, freesat and freeview built in(if poss?) , comes with, or works with magic/voice remote, 100hz or above screen. Thanks.

Was going to suggest LG. biggrin

Have a look at the Panasonics, if you don't mind the reflective screen. LG in this range are much better in this regard.

Our TV's are LG and never had a problem (touches wood)

Yesterday picked up a 49" inch LG from Currys/PC World for £419

Get it from somewhere like John Lewis that gives you a longer guarantee.

You won't get a 50" 4K 100hz TV for that budget.

I wouldn't say 4k is obvious at that price point, you might be better off getting a better standard def. Depends what your sources are, viewing distance etc. How often will you really use 4k sources?

Edit, I've said that, but your post made me look at TVs again as mine is broke and this came up: https://www.richersounds.com/lg-55uj630v.html?nost... (they do a smaller model for sub £500).

Some thoughts after spending several hours staring at some tvs at this price range in various shop floors.

I would be looking closer to the 50 inch for useful 4k resolution, but need to sit fairly close to the tv to benefit.

Samsung in the price range are bright panels (MU 6000 series), excellent contrast with much deeper blacks. Worked well for non HDR content. I liked the 49" MU6400 but viewing angles were not good.

Sony XE 7 series, decent motion handling and nice colours but the poor blacks/contrast tended to flatten the picture and therefore didn't have that impact. Could work better in brighter rooms.

Panasonics had the smoothest pictures for fast paced stuff but otherwise impressions were similar to the Sony with maybe not performing as well as the Sony for lower res stuff/colours. The blacks were fine though.

LGs were a bit of an all rounder, jack of all trades if you like but really good viewing angles. Suspect not the most impactful HDR performance.

Now, need to actually demo the Samsung for motion handling as I'm leaning towards that atm, but my impression is that it is about par with the Sony.

Now if I have double the budget, the decision is easy. Too bad. frown

Hi,

Interesting thread, Im in a similar boat and know nothing about LCD / Smart Tvs. I try and google search, read reviews and that just confuses me more.

The TV I'm looking at is a LG 43UJ630v 43inch. It will be for me son and his PS4. £345 on amazon.

Is this a good tv for the price ? Can I download apps on to it ?

Can't we just go back to analogue / big TVs / tubes ? :-)

Hi sbk, ive just purchased this tv in 43inch for my driving rig set up (ahem), its used with my xbox one and netflix etc.

its very good, bit dark at first and it needs updates via wifi when first unboxed, but generally very good. it has a good user interface (supposedly the best) you can download apps and the 4k picture is good enough for my lazy eyes!

i got mine from sainsburys for 349, useful if your a man who does nectar!

Thanks Richard.

I decided to buy it after all. From what I compared it was a pretty good TV and 349 seems a common price. ITs 2017 model, and although I could of brought other cheaper models I decided this as the legs to make it still useful for a couple of years.

It does comes with a stand doesn't it ?

I will update the firmware when it arrives :-)
