118d drives great but sounds terrible

Its been rattling for a while now and seems worse when hot.
Would this be the timing chain on the way out?
I believe this could be an engine out job is that right too?

If so what do you guys reckon my options are?
For the cost of just replacing the chain how about I buy a reconditioned engine to have fitted or maybe an upgrade?

Timing chain can be changed in situ. There are lots of specialists doing these changes very frequently. Afraid I don’t have any specific recommendations.
