door card membrane - suspicious!
Discussion
I used a fog machine recently to find source of my wet floor carpets (front and both sides) and removed the door cards.
The first photo below is the near side and looks ok, dry so the water seems to be coming in through the engine bay judging by the foot kick panel.

The driver's side is a Magiuver job featuring bubble wrap (sound insulation) and a plastic sheet but water is still getting through as the door card carpet below the speaker was wet. Should be the easier of the 2 to fix.

I was going to remove the old stuff, clean up and add some new membrane similar to this. Or is there a better solution?

If water is getting in and the carpet is wet near the speaker check the rubber door cap, it needs to be firmly glued down so as to form a good seal. If not secured down well then water gets past and runs down the front edge of the door doing exactly what you have described.
I am refixing my drivers side one today for exactly that reason, wet carpets on the drivers side.

I agree with Gruffalo - I spent ages tinkering with the rubber door surround. I ended up taking the whole lot off, re opening it and then reseating with some black mastic inside to seal properly. It took ages going along it to close the seal but it stopped the water ingress. Plus the mastic keeps it stuck to the frame in those awkward turns where the seal wants to come loose.
My rubber had a cut out at the bottom front part of the door- I can see the purpose of this but I ended up moving it further along as it was encouraging water to leave the seal as precisely the wrong place (near the speaker/ footwell where the water was easily getting in). My car was soaking at times but this sorted it as it stops any water from the door as well plus the carbon a frame piece.
I can remember clearing some little drain holes at the bottom of the door as well.

I think you're spot on with the wet speaker door card. The rubber cap was not glued down just loose. I am refixing my drivers side one today for exactly that reason, wet carpets on the drivers side.
The nearside was secured properly but the kick panel is wet so I'm looking for any ideas the typical ingress points around there. I assume wires, water pipes enter near bulkhead side?
