Walking through Bournemouth centre this morning I noticed 2 guys walking towards me. I recognised the voice of one of them but didn't twig until I had passed them that it was Gazza. I knew he lived in the area but it's always surprising.

Wish I'd had chance to shake his hand, what an absolute genius he was.

Any ideas or opinions on how well he looked?

Ha ha, sorry to disappointment you!

I thought he looked well actually. Smartly dressed and chatting away happily.

Out of all the players United allegedly missed out on over the years, he is the one I would have loved to see in the red shirt more than any.

He would be worth at least a billion in current market in his prime.

Gazza has essentially lived in Bournemouth for over a decade now, fighting his demons every day. Many of the town's taxi drivers have sad stories to tell of times they have picked him up in various states of a mess.

But as you say his story is a tragedy. So much talent ruined by a sad, but irresistable weakness.

He won't have turned into an alcoholic had he played for United either most probably. Terrible waste.

He was a talented footballer, but he was no genius.

In a football sense he was.

You see them in every field though, you rarely see an ex-footballer who played some of his best football at the mighty Spurs walking along a street in a seaside town.

I only mentioned it because I thought the Rover 800 Series was similar to the Legend. Admittedly not the Fastback, but the saloon version was.

My girlfriend was sat next to him on a flight from Southampton to Newcastle recently, she got him to sign a birthday card for one of her Geordie mates. Thats actually the second time she’s been sat next to him on that flight. She said he was chatting away and handing out Kinder chocolates to all the kids sat around him on the plane and in a much better state than when they first met years ago.

We used to live down in Bournemouth and many of our colleagues met him in various states. Such a shame but he seems to be getting the better of his demons these days which is nice to hear.

He actually had a great career so I never understand when people say he was a wasted talent. It was only when he retired did he really hit the bottle hard as he was struggling with not being in football anymore, something he'd known day in day out for years and years and then have it stop completely.
