Standard steering wheel size 987 vs 981
Discussion
Hello.
I'm looking to buy a used Cayman 987 or 981. While putting together a list of the differences between the generations, I think I've stumbled upon something I'd like clarified.
The 987 came with a 14.5 inch diameter steering wheel whether it was the manual or PDK wheel.
The 981 looks like it came with a 15 inch diameter steering wheel as standard, or you could pay extra for the sports design steering wheel which was smaller, coming in at 14.5 inches.
So that means the 987 had a 14.5 inch diameter wheel as standard, yet you had to pay for the smaller wheel in the 981 (sports design wheel).
Is the above correct because it looks that way to me?
I've had the chance to measure the diameter of the steering wheel in a 987 (neighbour's car) and can confirm it's 14.5 inches. I just don't have access to a 981 standard steering wheel.
Many thanks if anyone can clear this up for me!!

Hi, I know it looks like an odd question. It certainly won't sway me in my decision which car to buy, as my budget says it's a 987.
I was more curious about the way Porsche handle their options list. As we all know you can easily rack up £10,000 in options just by tinkering with the gearbox, seats, aircon and a few other things.
The question was more to settle my curiosity... that being... Porsche said 'let's introduce a sports option small steering wheel in the 981 which was standard in the 987'. If that's right, it's great marketing!

Wow!! Interesting to hear that.
Agreed, I prefer a smaller steering wheel. When you get a chance could you please measure the steering wheel diameter of the sports design wheel on your 981?
I'm guessing it's smaller than the 14.5 inch diameter wheel on the 987 Cayman, just not sure by how much. I think the sport design wheel was smaller than the standard 981 wheel?
Once again I'm not going to choose a car based on the steering wheel diameter, it's more for the sake of curiosity.
