I've decided to give the big volvo the heave ho and get rid of finance commitments with an impending wedding.

budget around £2000

Requirements:
Manual
proper 2+2 minimum seats, full 4 or 5 acceptable
Luggage space for 2 full size suitcases (ok with seats dropped)
Fun(well more than the xc60)

My shortlist:
Celica 1.8 vvti
Mercedes C class coupe
Hyundai coupe 2.0
Audi TT (space lacking and 1.8t poor economy)

probably put them in an order of preference, will be buying on condition not mileage of course.

anything I've missed or anything i need to look out for?

If it doesn't need to be a coupe like your list.
I could recommend a Twingo 133 can be had for 2k (just) will be faster than the toyota and hyundai in a straight line and all of them on a b road. 4 seats that can be folded down to make big boot.

I can highly recommend a Celica 190 T-Sport - tough as old boots (190 engine is a lot more robust than the 140) if you look past the apparent flimsiness of the doors, great handling, good performance, practical enough, great economy and being a Toyota never likely to go wrong

I bought one at 124k, sweet as a nut and bitterly regret selling it

I had pretty much the same requirements as you and ended up with an Alfa GT

Always liked the look of these...

...or do you want to get away from Volvo altogether?

Having owned a hyundai s3 2.0, I can't describe it as fun.

Nice enough to be in and look at, but handling was forgettable, and engine rough and underpowered.

The alfa 156 that replaced it could out handle it any day of the week, and its 1.6 engine sounded great and gave virtually the same performance.

Most will be knackered now though, and there doesn't seem to be a lot that replaced the swathe of mid to late 90 coupes I grew up with.

Warm/hot hatch and city cars seems to be where it is now for either fun or power (that aren't tdi diesel barges)

Also, from a quick look at autotrader <8 seconds to 60, the main things cropping up are rx8, SLKs, cheap fiesta STs and mini coopers.

Now, whether scrabbling to 60 is your definition of fun...? Dunno. An Astra sri will do it, but doubt vauxhall did much to the handling of that car to elevate it from the small family market.

I would have got a celica gen7 to replace the hyundai, but I needed 4 doors and I like the gen 5 / 6 GT4s way too much to have settled with a vvti.

yeah most interesting cars are well past it by now and there was a move from proper coupes to 3 door hatchbacks.

Celica remains favourite...MOT history on the ones I've checked are patch, lots of failures, some described as perfect, best example have years of corrosion advisories.

The C70, I've had an S60 and wouldn't describe it as fun.

A few C4 VTR/VTS coupes around what are they like? bit of an unknown to me

Fate is trying to stop me, the XC60 has decided to drop a nsf lower ball joint, specialist and volvo have both said its a full arm replacement replacement and the arm is updated and you cant just do one, both sides have to be done.

2 arms plus labour and a new tyre to replace the one that was getting low anyway but now has uneven wear will probably take half the replacement car budget.

debating just sticking a part worn on it and taking it to WBAC etc and chancing my arm.

One of my elderly customers hung up the keys of his Hyundai Coupe last week, might be worth a look, i'll find out how much it is.

A really nice Puma with a few tweaks, perhaps. Wouldn't recommend sticking people in the back for long, mind.

Alfa GTV? One suitcase in the boot, one on the bench seat in the back?

I'd love a GTV but the only one for sale locally has the baby sick, sorry Tan interior.

3 series compact?

seems its 316 / 325 and no middle ground though

Ditto. £1500 in and so far it's excelled my expectations in every way, an utterly lovely thing. I went for the dirty derv due to my annual mileage but the handling is rather good so with a fizzy petrol I imagine it could make for good fun.

This colour?

A GTV with tan interior is a lovely thing - unfortunately it usually tends to be paired with a black exterior and my OCD just wouldn't be able to cope with maintaining a black car!

My brother is selling a Celica VVTLi (you don't want the 140bhp VVTi) well inside your budget:

Getting new brake discs/pads put on all round, it's in good condition for shed money and drove much better than quite a few Celicas I tested for him.

I have a C4 VTR+, it's a 5 door rather than a coupe but very much the same. It's not a bad place to be, handles ok, steering is a bit dull, loaded with kit and surprisingly for a french car (I can only speak for mine) everything works.
Mine is the 1.6 petrol which is shared with Peugeot and BMW in the mini I think.

They are dirt cheap, mine's an 08 model and cost less then a grand.
