Boring question alert.

My wifes 57 plate Audi A6 avant needs some new front tyres. The car seems to eat front tyres at an alarming rate. I have had the geometry and tracking checked and all is ok.

The car came with 225/50R17 98YXL Continental Sport Contact 2 and I still have two nearly new tyres on the rear.

I have been quoted £130 all inclusive each, for the two new fronts, but am thinking that it might be time to change brand for a longer lasting tyre.

Any suggestions?

I used to use Dunlop Sport Maxx on our 58 plate and got 28,000 miles out of the last set. But then I'm gentle on tyres anyway and it was quattro which probably helps.

I liked them.

Goodyear Effiicientgrip @ about £105? Sounds like the sort of thing you're after.

And how could you drive an A6? Who do you know that thinks it's interesting? Why did you choose such a tedious car? etc etc etc

Thanks all. Im sort of stuck in a cycle as the rears are nearly new, i want a matching set and buy the same fronts again and again.

Your suggestions are all excellent and my mechanic has suggested Yoko Bluearth - i have used these on my even more teedious B6 shape A4 1.9tdi with long life and excellent grip.

To keep a matching set will cost me £260 - to change the full set will set me back at least £400.

Personally, I wouldn't be too hung up on a matching set of 4 on a FWD car.

Yes, it really doesn't make the difference 'the forums' suggest.

As long as you're mixing reasonable equivalents (i.e. snow tyres one end, track day tyres the other) then I doubt you'd notice at all.

I always used to try and match brands, but so long as they're the same on the same axle (and similar tread depths) then you're fine.

Years ago I had an XR2 which got a puncture and put a brand new tyre on the front with the quite worn other one. The car was almost undriveable. Pulled really badly one way under acceleration and then the other way under braking.

Soon swapped it round with one on the back and it was way better. But since then I've always replaced in pairs where practicable.
