Need a fixed IP address - any recommendations ?
Discussion
Hi Guys
I am self employed and do paperwork from home.I have BT home broadband which was renewed for 12 months late last year. I now need to access a remote secure service which requires I have a fixed IP address. I have spoken to the ever helpful BT who have advised that they only offer this on Business packages and the only way they would change to a business account is if I ran the 2 broadband services side by side which would include having to pay for an additional line.
Google suggests I can pay for a VPN service to supply a fixed IP but there seem to be thousands of sites most of which seem to be pushing the fact they allow you to stream contents from other countries and / or hide your identity.
Does anyone have any recommendations of any providers of such a service or any experience with one?

Hi Stuart,
You will struggle to get a fixed IP on any 'home' broadband connection.
How about using Dyn DNS? it essentially gives you a hostname that stays the same and then tracks your dynamic IP address which will change.

Another thought, although I've never used it, is noip.com, a free dynamic DNS.

That works incoming to your site, but wouldn't work if the site you are trying to access requires some sort of verification of the IP that you are accessing from? You will struggle to get a fixed IP on any 'home' broadband connection.

BT business broadband is not an issue at a home address - I run my business from an office in the garden - and have no issue with one line and a BT business broadband account and a fixed IP address - it isn't necessarily the cheapest option, but seems very reliable and at the time was the only way to get faster broadband...
so whoever told you that you would need two lines etc. is wrong - you might though need your home line to be on the business account - but you can keep the same number
