Was he hanging on there or has the fill-flash frozen the wing movement? It's amazing you can see the ball joint where the wings articulate so clearly. Lovely shot
For these macro shots are you using a ring flash or is the Canon flash OK for macro work? I'm finding that I'm getting odd shadows using the built-in flash on the D100 with the mnacro lens. Maybe it's time to go for the Sigma ring flash type of arrangement for more even lighting.

That's probably the top of the lens getting in the way of the flash.
Yep, I think you're right, it'll be the lens shadowing the flash. I'll try more extensively with my old tech SB24 with a softener to see what I can do. Did look at getting an lead to connect camera to flash and still maintain some functionality.
Nikon want the grand total of £75 for the lead It's only a small piece of lead with a hotshoe at one end and a flash foot at the other!!!
Makes the Sigma dedicated ring flash seems not too bad a price. At least the Sigma is compatible with Mrs CVP's D70. Nikon have not yet seen fit to update the SB29 to have full functionality with the digital cameras. Not one to rush themselves are they

If that's the SC29 try an eBay import - about £40 IIRC.

Don't hold your breath; they have the SB600/800 for the digital range!

No, it's the SC17. I'm connecting a D100 to an "old tech" SB24 flashgun. Don't get lots of modes but still get auto metering. Cheers for the ebay tip though I'll give that a try.

True, I'll probably have to get rid of the old SB24. It's a shame as it packs a lot of power for long range fill-flash in daylight but now it'll only be worth a few quid.

Hmm, a Sigma ring flash... what's the model number please - I may have to add one to my wants list! You just can't get even flash illumination with a top-mounted jobbie.
What you need is an EZ580, John. Oh...and all the other Canon stuff to go with it of coarse!

580EX? Pah, top lit nonsense
What you REALLY want is a Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX
Details
Got one a couple of weeks ago, it's the dog's danglers
Still getting to grips with it, but this is an early effort
