Hi guys,

I'm sick of buying individual packs of various nuts/bolts every time I need something. Can anyone recommend where to buy a decent-sized selection of nuts/bolts/washers etc to keep at home?

I'm thinking M4-M10 in various lengths, washers, nuts etc.

Orbital Fasteners allow you to order right down to singles. Delivery cost might work out high if you don't want a huge pile, but a couple of dozen of this, a couple of dozen of that, a handful of those will probably work out cost-effective.

Various shops on eBay are reasonable, just a pain ordering singularly.

Wilco stores sometimes have a 'fill a bag' shelf. A small bag (A6?) is about £3

This, always.

Lots of what you get from BnQ and the like are very low quality and or very expensive.

Then get a multi compartment box, sort according.

If you aren't too fussed about grade or quality, there are lots of sellers on Amazon, eBay etc who offer retail quantities in various sizes, and many of them also sell mixed packs. They're cheap, but you take your chances on quality.

If you need high tensile fixings, or need to be sure those 'stainless' bolts will really stay rust-free, you would be advised to buy from a reputable supplier such as Namrick.

I use toolstation for all my fasteners. Free next day delivery and have the garage stocked with M5 to M16 in differing lengths.

As already mentioned get some compartmentalised storage boxes and keep nuts and washers in 1, M5 & M6 in another, and M8, M10, M12 and M16 in each of the rest of them.
Anything bigger than M16 goes in a bucket, to be tipped on the floor to be sorted through when required!

If you are in the northwest JR Webster & Co.

http://ukbolting.co.uk/

Standard 'high tensile' grade bolts should be considered a bare minimum almost all jobs, and should have 8.8 stamped into the head.

Westfield Fasteners also appear to be good.

Couple of years ago I needed a box of 200 Woodscrews.
B & Q £10.99
Left and drove to Screwfix around the corner.
Same box, same brand £3.99.
B & Q own Screwfix I believe.
That is one big difference in price.
They were even cheaper online.
I have never been back to B & Q.
As said, if you dont need them immediately, online is superfast and cheap.

pricing at B&Q vs. Screwfix illustrates how joe public get ripped of because they dont have a frame of reference where the tradesman knows how much to pay from his experience of buying the product every day/week.

Some of it is market segmentation, but some if it also different needs.

You can get a ten pack of hinges in Screwfix for the same price a a pair in BnQ, but the pair in BnQ come with the screws, which would be anth few quid in Screwfix, and lands the customer with five times more hinges than they need in that lifetime.

But yes, they are both in the Kingfisher group, and share suppliers for a reasonable amount of the range.

Cheap enough but I put in M8 bolt, pretty standard size, and while they claim them to be "high tensile" there is no actual spec, eg 8.8?

Screwfix are primarily builders merchants, bolts are probably fine for making a garden bench but I wouldn't buy them for automotive use.
