I have a £10-13k budget and need an SUV for the family wagon. Dogs, Bikes ect

Has anyone been in the situation having considered the above, if so I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Both are good cars - both can throw the occasional large bill.

Do you need offroad capability or just the space/style?

And because this is pistonheads, a link to the obvious 4x4 choice that was not on your list.

You can thank me later.

I ran an XC60 D5 for around a year. It was awful.

I've not driven a Q5 but I can't imagine it could be worse than the Volvo.

I was in the same position about 4yrs ago ... TT written off and needed a family wagon for impending baby, dog blah blah blah

I opted for an S6 and ran that for 2yrs till both manifolds cracked and sold it to a chap to use as a txi somewhere in the eastern block and was back with the same dilemma

I went and viewed a couple of Q3, Q5, XC60, V70, Ford Kuga, RRS, RR Evoque, X5, X3, X6, Tiguan, Toureag - all over the stated budget but all now within that budget - all 08 to 61 plates ... then I came across a Q7 and just adored with the space, feel, height, comfort and generally everything about it - it was massively spec'd from new and was very competitively priced (V8 4.2 TDi)

Ive now had it for a little over 2yrs and am moving it on later this year and not entirely sure what to replace with

Q5's are great and in fairness the main difference between the 5 and 7 is the extra seats in the 7 (mine have never been unfolded from the boot floor) and the manual box option in the 5 - ideal for family duties and mway munching smile

Looked at both last year, same scenario, kids, dogs, bikes plus camping gear. Was very very close to getting the XC60 D5 as the room and toys where better than the Q5.

On the day of buying the XC60 had a last minute change of mind and ended up with a 3.0Tdi A4 Quattro Black Edition Estate, better use of the room, better drive, better put together, plus much better equipment. I did a lot of research into the XC60 and was sure that's what we where going to end up with but don't regret the A4 Estate for a 'do all' car.

Thanks for the responses so far. Ideally I'd like to keep the engine size around the 2Lt oil burner size due to miles and driving style the wife will be doing.

She had the Grand Cherokee around 8 years ago and hated it, I loved it!!

Q5 needs to be a V6, the 2.0 isn’t enough, it’s not very nice and most will have been abused as family cars by people who don’t have the budget to run them properly

The SQ5 is a stonking car though, the Q7 is to big and like a boat, i’d Rather take my chances with a discovery 3 or rr sport.

I’d go for a Ford Kuga or Kia/Hyundai and get a newer better car for your money

We love our XC60 (D5). comfy, spacious, useful turn of speed, great family tool and a cheap 2nd hand buy compared to ze german alternatives I think.

+1. just make sure you get the last of the 2.2 diesel and not the new 1.6 or something they have shoved in it.

I'd say that you'll be hard pressed to look past the Ford Kuga they come loaded with kit (in Titanium X Spec) with low miles.

The XC60 (unless it's a 2.4) use the same chassis electrics & running gear as the Kuga anyway so why not get a newer low mileage version.

id go for an estate. you will get something that is newer and better for your money. you could get a very nice volvo v60, 2-3 years old. equivalent xc60 much older and leggy.
