£15k - what to buy
Discussion
Thought id ask this question her.e
Ive got £15k to spend on a porsche and have it between the 2007 2,7 Cayman or a 2002 C4 911 (both manual) which has been rather well cared for.
Wondered what people would do in my shoes?
Its just a fun toy for me to drive about in round town, and to head to europe with my mates for a few days hooning about. Car will probablly only be kept a year, which is why im leaning towards the 911 as depreciation should be minimal. Ive got a car for the day to day durge, but practicality wouldnt be a bad thing, though not a deciding factor.
Had a 2004 996 turbo and a 2005 boxster 2.7 in the past, so either car would be similar to what ive had before - in a way.

Hate to say this as a porsche owner, but that price is, or could be an expensive mistake unless you are knowledgeable in what you look for.
The low mileage s2000 would be a safer move.
Or there are some great deals out there for a tin top beamer Z4. They are a nice car.
Just be careful, your previous history with cars will lead you to the right deal for what you want from a car.
Personally, I would take a safe option unless you are prepared to shell out if the porsche goes wrong.
Good luck.

Sounds like your priority is buying something that won't have a big bill in next 12 months, and can be sold on easily, at £15k you are not going to lose much if any money if you buy wisely.
If you know the 911 is a good one then go for that, although C2 would be better bet than C4
to be honest in your shoes I would look for a car with a careful owner and nice lot of recent receipts in good nick - and would worry less whether that was a Boxster, Cayman or 911

Car has had the same owner for the past 9 years and he has lavished a fair few quid on it at Northway - i called them up yesterday and they confirmed the car had been with them 8 times, with a most of the serviceable parts changed.
Tyre's are the correct N rated ones (things like that tell me a lot about the owner) and he is happy to take it to an OPC for a full inspection, hence that provides me with some comfort.
I do see what you guys are saying though bout buying a cheaper car perhaps, and pocketing the rest for a rainy day.

I spent a shade under £15000 on a 2.7 Cayman a year ago and have been enjoying it hugely (as a 2nd car). So I would say it's a good purchase and £15k should buy a decent 07 2.7.
By the end of this month after the car has been in for a major service I would have spent about an extra £1.6k on it, the plugs will have been changed, the coil packs are splitting (apparently - not affecting performance at the moment) so will be replaced, rear discs and pads replaced, new water pump, brake fluid change. So required some cash to keep it in good shape but to be honest I don't mind, a lot of these items are service items.
Whether the 911 would be a better purchase or not I'm not sure as never driven one but did you have a preference on mid-engined vs rear-engined and bigger engine vs smaller 'revvy' engine based on your previous Porsches?

Main preference is something to have a little fun in, mainly on a 2k road trip round europe in May which will be a good mix of autobahns and twisty country roads.
Other cars going inc GT3, M6, M4, Focus RS, 996 C4S & a Maserati - so it needs to be able to keep up with those cars.
Priorities were 0-60 sub 6 secs, and a top speed of over 160. My 2,7 boxster really struggled to get to 160 last yr, so need something that will hit that easily.

That was the issue with the boxster - keeping up.
Gear changes were rather frequent too and needed to wring its neck a little as only 5 gears, and no cruise control in that either!
This is damn tricky!!
I was originally just going to buy an M2, but house extension and something called 'contingency' ... has killed that idea!

The 996.2 C4 is the car im seeing tomorrow morning
One question i do have though - re inspection, is an OPC 111 point check enough, or would it be better to get Porsche Inspections to do it - albeit for double the £.
not sure where you are based - I got a PPI done by 9E - trust them more than OPC and cost was about 150 incl vat

If the former then sounds like the 2.7 is out. Although sure it will have no problem cruising around 130-140mph.Black 996 looks nice, good luck with the purchase whichever way you go.
