Hi guys,

By coincidence I have 2 mates both looking for a 964 RS at the moment and a third who seems to have settled on one that he has found.

I know about all the usual places to look, but does anyone know of any decent cars for sale, preferably a Clubsport (but not essential) and preferably with Motec? I would advise them to avoid cars with fancy German engine conversions as these seem to be a bit hit and miss.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

John.

Paul at GT Classics has 'old yella', that is Peter964RSs 9M 340bhp 964RS up for sale (32k?) www.gtclassics.co.uk or something.
Can't remember, but google around it if it's not. I am not sure whether it is a CS but it has roll cage and quite a few mods.

Also, my tech may know of a few (including my old one which could be in the pipeline after full restoration, 2 years on, yawn). Andy Fearns: 07730 989895.

Thanks Dom.

We had a look at the ad for the yellow car. I have asked the owner for details. I know one of the chaps doesn't fancy a red one though.....sorry about that!!

My mate came up with this car to consider:

www.autofarm.co.uk/car.php3/sb454.html

Does anyone know anything about this car? I love the colour combo.

The only thing that puts me off is the German engine conversion. We all know that these can be a bit ropey / hit and miss (I speak from personal experience). My advice would be to have the car inspected and put on the rollers, probably at 9M.

What do you guys think?

What are you on about?

Everyone knows that the Germans know sod-all about engines, right Get real.

You've had bad experience, fair enough, maybe you'll be more careful next time.

In any game there will be honest trustworthy people, cowboys who tuck you up, and the full range in between (including the honest and trustworthy who make a genuine mistake occasionally).

Slagging off "German engine conversion" per se cannot be justified.

Would you count Ruf as "ropey", for example?

If anything puts you off, it should be the tangerine wheels I would respray them black and remove the Carrera stickers (unoriginal anyway). Then it would look pretty damn mean

Without wishing to deliberately "big ourselves up", Johnny does have a point when it comes to normally aspirated conversions on the 964RS & 993RS engines. John's experience with his engine was not an isolated case, another near identical conversion had exactly the same faults that were relatively easily solved with attention to detail and remapping. I'm sure other tuners have similar stories to tell (give Andy from AMD a kick?).

The 3.8/cams/ecu modded engine in the Autofarm black/orange car for example makes a credible 317bhp (according to the advert) whereas a Motec conversion on a standard engine typically makes 320bhp. A similar 964 3.8 engine with Motec & cams on standard intake and exhaust (usual cat bypass/cup pipe) in our shop is currently making 356bhp on the dyno (317bhp at the tyre). Big difference in result, small difference in cost.

We see similar results with 3.8 conversions on the standard 993, more often than not a well remapped standard 3.6 will pull more bhp & torque on the dyno than an "off the shelf" German 3.8 conversion (P&C, RS cams, ecu). No difference in result, huge difference in cost!

However, in defence of the Germans (unlike the Brits), they do make damn fine sports cars that are nigh on bomb proof in standard form, thus giving us tuners an awful lot to go at, so for that I can only say "Thank You!".

And there are no UK outfits doing dodgy work, it's just the Germans, right? Get real.

It seems I have heard about more examples of ropey German tuning work than you. Sorry about that.

I am not questioning the tuning abilities of Ruf, they are a good firm.

But there have been lots of German conversions done on 993 RSs that quite simply do/did NOT produce the gains that they claimed to. It has been seen time and time again. I have no need to make up stories like this. I have nothing to gain from it.

The simplest way to check the engine power is to pop the car on the rolling road and see what happens.

Is that "real" enough for you? I hope you see now what I "am on about".

I think 9M has managed to get more power from a (normally aspirated) 993RS engine than any german tuner. Or if not, they are keeping very quiet

Roock etc claim about 360bhp at most, whereas I believe that Mr Belton's RS engine is knocking on the door of 400bhp.

Not knocking the Germans, just showing that some serious Porsche tuning expertise exists in the UK. There are good and bad tuners both sides of the channel, I'm sure, but if 9M can get the power of a 3.8 out of a 3.6 for similar money, that is surely an impressive fact?

I know where I'd take a normally aspirated RS engine to be modified...
