....any ideas?

My eldest lad has some English homework, whereby he has to write a comedy. They've been watching Fawlty Towers in their English lesson at school (they never did such things in my day). Now they've been tasked with writing a comedy and he's asked me for some inspiration. And I don't have any! Once he gets a basic idea, he's confident that he can write a funny story around the concept.

So, over to the PH massive in this. If we pick a winner I'll post the story on this thread in the next few days!

People using internet chatrooms pretending to be something they're not (in a funny way of course, not in a kiddie-fiddling way!!)

What about some people working in 'Halfrauds' who come up against all kinds of strange characters who spend many times the value of their cars on stick-on tat?

Quite like that concept. A lad buys a Nova for £2k with a view to selling it for a profit. Spends another £3k putting on wings, stripes, erc.. His insurance premium doubles and the car plummets in value!

How does that work? Do they take away your old wife and bring you back a nice shiny car instead? Sounds like a winner to me

In all seriousness a really good sitcom relies on a really good situation, i.e. psycho hotelier, self-sufficient suburbanites, femail vicar etc.

How about a bloke trying to build his own house using the worst builders possible? Or a car dealership run by a bloke who hates cars and pushes the benefits of public transport?

Take a normal situation and put in a couple of nutters - look at how long the Brittas Empire ran or christ sake!

How about a story where a guy tries to impress a girl by buying her a winged glass horse and offering to take her up the OXO tower?

Sorry Charlie, couldn't resist

I've had an idea for a sitcom for a while actually, potentially called 'Keeping Up With The Joneses'. Premise is this: over-aspirational Daily Mail types move into a nouveau riche neighbourhood and find themselves constantly trying to compete with their more comfortably off neighbours in daft, desperate and tasteless displays of wealth. Couple that with a weird covertly neo-Nazi scoutmaster as their other next-door neighbour (he's restoring a Panzer), a sub-plot about bumping off Grandma to claim an inheritance, and the ultimate revelation that the houses respective children - at university - are not only a couple of raving lentilists, but are going out with each other.

Go to Alderley Edge, Wilmslow or Bramhall and you'll see the comic potential. Streets full of chavs who think they aren't simply because they live in megabuck houses.

Thanks from my kid Wanty, my kid's handing in his homework in today. I said I'd post it (as follows):

Ethyl’s Dilemma

The Scene: Ethyl Torika, A pro-environmentalist finally gets a well paid job selling second hand cars. She needs to earn money, but is also concerned about carbon emissions and global warming. How does she cope with this conundrum?

Characters include:

Ethyl Torika (an anagram of Keith Taylor, The UK Green Party leader)
Marge Fliers (anagram of Farmer Giles)
Flash Allstar (anagram of Flash Allstar)
Major Leon (anagram of Joe Normal)
Rev. Seagram (anagram of Mrs. Average)

Boss: Hello Ethyl

Ethyl: Hi Boss, Can’t wait to get started

(The door opens)

Boss: Here’s your first customer

Marge Fliers: Why helooooooo there, I am interested in that large Range Rover out there.

Ethyl: hmmmm, Range Rover. Well that’s a very heavy big car you do know, very high fuel consumption.

Marge Fliers: Yes, I know. I only want to see if I can have a look around it.

Ethyl: Well that really depends on where you live?

Marge Fliers: Well I live on a large farm just outside Smogsville.

Ethyl: Oh, a farm, you want a light car, to get over all those little bumps, also very environmentally friendly. Take a look at this small Mazda MX-5.

Marge Fliers: Oh no, I can’t possibly have that; it’s so dreadfully small and posy.

Ethyl: It’s a fantastic car. For a farm it will help the crops to grow and the environment.

Marge Fliers: But I would like a drive in the Range Rover but if you won’t let me buy it then I’ll shop elsewhere.

Ethyl: bye bye then.

(The door closes)

(The door opens)

Ethyl: Hello Sir. How may I be of service?

Flash Allstar: Well I saw that very nice Porsche 911 Turbo out there.

Ethyl: Porsche eh?

Flash Allstar: Ye, I’ve been looking around for one for ages, it’s a very fast and reliable and…

Ethyl: A gas guzzler.

Flash Allstar: What? (Shocked and confused)

Ethyl: Oh yes. It uses lots of gas; it’ll cost you a cataclysmic amount of money in petrol. You wouldn’t possibly want that would you?

Flash Allstar: Well I am aware that the economy of the vehicle is…

Ethyl: Awful, yes I know. That is why I would recommend a hybrid.

Flash Allstar: I want a fast car, a car with power and performance.

Ethyl: You can get some very quick hybrids nowadays.

Flash Allstar: Well can you find me a fast one that I can buy here?

Ethyl: Definitely not sir. We do no trading with hybrid cars, they are too expensive, but very economic.

Flash Allstar: Then why did you recommend them to me?

Ethyl: Because the fuel consumption on that Porsche is terrible.

Flash Allstar: Well if you won’t let me buy it then I’ll shop elsewhere.

Ethyl: bye bye then.

(The door closes)

(The door opens)

Ethyl: Can I help you sir?

Major Leon: Yes, thank you. I would like to buy a small hatchback. I am not sure which to choose. In your opinion what would you do?

Ethyl: Well, I would go for public transportation. The train service is good, very reasonable prices now.

Major Leon: Yes that’s all very nice, but there is no station within miles of my house.

Ethyl: Where do you live then?

Major Leon: I live in Bergsburg.

Ethyl: Oh there. A very, very good bus service there, nearly never late.

Major Leon: But I enjoy driving and would like to buy a c…

Ethyl: There a tram system at Bergsburg?

Major Leon: No, I want a vehicle that is able to trans…

Ethyl: Coaches? You could walk, Tube? Hot air balloon? Telep…

Major Leon: NOOOOO!!! I just want to buy a car.

Ethyl: But they’re very sluggish and not very practical.

Major Leon: Well if you won’t sell me one, there are plenty of garages will.

Ethyl: bye bye then.

(The door closes)

(The door opens)

Ethyl: (Bored) Yes, can I help you? (Sighs)

Rev. Seagram: Well yes, I’d like to buy a

Ethyl: Car?

Rev. Seagram: Why yes, that’s why I’m

Ethyl: At a car dealership?

Rev. Seagram: Well yes, can you help me.

Ethyl: Yes I can, but, I don’t want to.

Rev. Seagram: Well, why not?

Ethyl: Because… (Grabs something from behind her) ALL CARS ARE EVIL!!!! (Waves around flags and banners)

Boss: I’ve employed some awful salespeople I my time, but I’ve never employed someone as bad as you! You’re fired!

(Door Opens) Ethyl kicked out. (Door closes)

I'll take 10% of any profit. Or a starring role alongside Lesley Joseph.
