Hi,

I own an Audi A3 2012 with the 2.0 TDI CR 140 engine (CFFB). It has 150k km on it, mostly from driving 80-100 km rides back and forth from work.

Other than the water pump going at 70k km, it has been working great up until 2 months ago. Randomly, it would start to stutter. This seemed more prone to happen at cold starts, but could randomly happen at steady speeds / gentle accelerations. I think it only fired on 3 (or perhaps even less cylinders). I had the car sent to dealer, TWICE, but they cannot find any error codes and the car seemed to drive fine when they tried it. Since it was pretty random at this point they probably got lucky with their cycle.

Last week, things have gotten significantly worse. The limping has been so significant I've had to pull over to stop the engine. Sometimes restarting the engine seems to fix the problem for the second.

I went to buy my own code reader today to check for errors. No faults could be found...

What could possibly cause this issue?

I've read threads were people had similar issues, with fault codes showing EGR valve. Is it possible for the EGR valve to be acting up without showing fault codes? I did go for a short ride today with live data showing EGR error %. It would flicker around 0+-2 %, with very brief flickers to ~95 %. The car was running horribly today and I could only drive 10-20 km/h with warning lights on... If the EGR unit (with cooler and everything) wasn't located at the back of the engine I would take it off for a thorough cleaning.

Please help. I would like to avoid leaving it at the shop again since they couldn't find it the other times.

Not too sure what it could be, however I had similar symptoms on my 1.6 TDI when the EGR went.

If your car had the Emissions software update your car automatically has a 2 year warranty on the EGR and many other parts. Just google Audi Trust Building.

No remap done by Audi. Are there any ways for me to check the EGR function with a regular OBD reader? I have no problems wrenching on this myself, but since there are no fault codes I am unsure where to start. Leaving it at a shop quickly costs money.
