Hi all,

Looking at swapping my ZT190 for a saxo VTS to make it into a track day car. The car has history and 117k on it. Main things to look out for?

Cheers

Watch for the rear axles - can't remember how to check but have a quick google and I'm sure you'll find out. They're quite expensive to replace and so makes it uneconomical to repair a lot of the time, my old VTR was scrapped due to this. Dodgy connections under the passenger seat sometimes trigger a warning light, and it's quite common for water to get in through the aerial base and collect in the interior light. I used to get rather wet when it was raining if I went around a left hand corner....

Also check for a massive amount of rust on the rear sills just in front of the rear wheels. Water gets in behind the pop on arch trims and sits in the sill eventually rusting it out. The side skirts may hide the holes at MOT time but if you pop off the rear trims and have a poke you can normally create a reasonable size hole.

As per a previous poster too, sunroof seals / drain pipes fail and water gets in the car. Not a problem if you intend to remove the sunroof and plate over it but otherwise prepare to get wet every time it rains / has rained.

If the rear beam looks like it's in need of a rebuild you're looking at a good £350+ to get it rebuilt properly / factor in lowering, shocks, etc, if you're using it on track.

Most of them will have had various dodgy mods on them in years gone by which have since been removed so factor in costs for repairing any issues from fallout on that front.

Or just look for a car that has already been converted / prepped (properly) - it will be cheaper in the long run.

I should know as I used to run a VTS as a track car a few years ago - bought a cheap / modded VTS and then found numerous additional jobs that needed doing (some expensive) including plating the leaking sunroof. Eventually I got a couple of years fun / use out of it both on track / road, but eventually the rust in the rear sills killed it so it got stripped for the expensive parts and the shell flogged for a backup for parts to a guy using the car in SaxMax (I think)
