Hi all,

I currently drive a modified Volvo C30 T5 - lately I've been considering a change, but I'm drawing a blank on what to look at so I thought I'd ask PH!

The list of requirements is as follows:

- £10k budget
- Reasonably insurable, I've got 6 years NCB (age 23) and live in a low-risk area though
- Ideally something a bit newer than the Volvo (58 plate) as I like my tech and creature comforts
- 4 seats - the back ones can be tiny as they're rarely used, but I do need the ability to get 4 people in from time to time
- Fun to drive, I've come from a history of fast Fords and MX5s for reference there
- Faster than the Volvo (250bhp, 0-60 in 5.9 with the current mods)
- Ideally rear or all-wheel drive, but I can be flexible on this
- Would like a manual 'box
- My childish side would like 6-8 cylinders, purely for the noise really, this isn't a requirement though as I can add a sportier exhaust at a later date anyway
- I'm not a fan of BMWs/Audis/Mercs, can't really explain why - I'm just not!

Hopefully this helps, all suggestions appreciated!

Dismissing the obvious choices narrows your scope...a lot.

My choice might be:

Monaro, basic, older than your Volvo, but phenomenal in their own way and not really depreciating now.

Chrysler 300C SRT-8 / Hemi. Nasty generally, but lots of bells and whistles and marvellous engine...you could buy one for £5k and supercharge it! Thug image too...

EVO 10? Fun but fragile.

Impreza? Less fun and they look like Astras - more reliable than the EVO (maybe).

Golf R32? Audi in VW clothes?

Jag S type R? Jaguar's often overlooked performance bargain?

However, I'd up the budget slightly and buy an N55 135i - with a few minor mods, you'll have 400 reliable bhp, rear drive and if you dial in some negative camber on the front, a car that's rewarding to drive too.

Good luck

I've changed my mind - I'd buy a Toybaru GT86/BRZ. Slower, but they teach you to drive, reward like few others, and they are just about within your budget now...
