Hey there,

This week my 2010 Panasonic 50 inch plasma conked out. All of a sudden. It just switched off. Now when you try and turn it on, the green light just flashes and it 'clicks' occasionally. Have left it over night, unplugged it... Nadda.

So wise people of Pistonheads, is this worth fixing or should I just bin it and buy a new one. A bit of research suggests the power supply board might be fecked. Annoyingly it went out of warranty 2016 - I still have the John Lewis receipt. Things just don't last anymore. I recall my parents had the same Grundy set for most of my upbringing...

So fix or bin... Tell me your thoughts...

My G30 series plasma died last year with similar symptoms to yours and it was the energy recovery circuit that blew and it knackered the screen.

How many times do the lights flash when you switch it on at the main switch?

Thanks yes I've seen that diagram. I haven't been able to count the flashes as they happen so quickly. I'd say it was towards the bottom of that scale tho. So 13 perhaps.

Did you replace or fix it?

I guess a half descent 50 inch is only around 500 quid so I don't really know what to do.

Its fun trying to count the lights! smile
I ended up scrapping it and was looking at new ones but unfortunately most these days have only got 2 HDMI sockets so I ended up getting an immaculate used 2014 Panny LED off someone I know for £100.
Its got 4 HDMI and a pretty decent picture but its not as nice as the plasma was and its not got THX mode.
Its a shame the plasma was uneconomical to repair as it was a superb TV to watch.

Yeah I agree, the picture quality, depth of colour is very nice on the Panasonic.

I'll have another go at counting the flashes. If it's the fans then if I'm jammy I may get away with a clean...come to think of it, the better half did mention it got rather warm the other day... But that could be it just frying itself.

It's mounted on the wall so will have to come off anyhow. I suppose a couple of tins and get my screw drivers out one evening. May be worth a shout and I'll try not to electrocute myself!!

I would give it a try. The problem I had was that parts are getting scarce for them now. You get the odd board coming up on eBay now and then but if you start changing boards about without a proper diagnosis then you could be wasting money on a dead TV.

Cheers Dudleybloke. I'll give it a shot on the weekend and let you how I get on.

In the meantime I'll ask around and see if someone wants to sell me their 50 inch LCD for a hundred quid! That sounds a right bargain!!

What is happening? Is it just the TV channels or are you getting problems switching between AV sources?
Do you hear any relay type clonking noises when you change channels/inputs?

My Panasonic LCD died today as well. Same flashy light but flashing 30+ times.

Making enquiries to get it repaired but suspect a new one will be required.

Bought from Costco so 5 year guarantee - It's six years old cry

Try it. If you get relay Clonks it could be related to the power board or energy recovery circuit.
Other than that I've no idea.
Have you tried resetting to shipping condition?

Sounds a bit obvious, however have you tried just videoing it with your phone and playing back in slo-mo?

Feel your pain, I have a 42" Panasonic plasma and I'm hoping it doesn't die because all of the OLED screens are too large to fit in the space I have next to the fireplace.

My 46" Plasma Continues on. I am looking to replace it with the FZ950 55" set when they land on these shores.Even then it's going in the TV room upstairs with the 32" Sharp heading for a bedroom.
