BMW X3 used - a good buy?

I've got a Fabia Vrs 1.4 Tsi , which I enjoy and it was fine with just me and my wife. Now we have a baby and my wife likes to sit in the back , which is a problem as I'm 6'2 and need my seat right back.
Now the X3 seems like it might be a good option as a new car. It fulfills the size requirements and I presume they are safe. With the 30d engine it's also pretty quick. After having the vrs , I don't want a slow car anymore.
My budget is around 20k, I see I could probably get a 2012/13 X3 30d in this price range.
Anyway, the X3 30d, will it be reliable? I do lots of local journeys too, 18 mile round trip to work. Do you rekon i'll have DPF problems?
Have been looking at golf R estates , which look nice also.
