Extended Ford Warranties
Discussion
Hi,
Normally I buy a year old ford and add a warranty for the 4th and 5th Year. These warranty now have to be purchased prior to the first reg...
Bugger.. Any other options for a decent warranty, or do I need to buy a Hyundai!
Has anyone ever extended a Ford Direct Warranty? Or any other suggestions?
Thanks
Barry

As of Feb 2019 Ford Protect are now selling used car extended warranties, and you can get a quote and buy direct online or by phone.
Previously, you could only buy a Ford Protect extended warranty when buying a new car.
https://www.myfordprotect.co.uk/
For my 2016 Mondeo 240 Ecoboost, I was quoted £120 a year, or £10 a month by direct debit.
The maximum claim limit is the value of the car.
The website provides clear information on what is covered or excluded and a policy document can be downloaded before buying.
Most things are covered, including cats, entertainment, nav. The exclusions look entirely reasonable.
Warranty is transferable if you sell the car and can also be terminated with a pro-rata refund if required, e.g. if you part-exchanged at a dealer.
For comparison, I looked at equivalent cover from warranty direct and with all the cover options selected, the price for 3 years was £650. From several other warranty insurance providers the price was up to £1500 for 3 years.
When I bought my car, the dealer only offered a dealership based Crystal Clear warranty. By comparison, that's a rip-off.
It's not an insurance product regulated by the FCA, so no 14 day cooling off period, not transferable, and cannot be cancelled.
It cost £499 for 3 years. The maximum single claim limit is £1000, and the total claim limit is £5000.
So it wouldn't cover many of the expensive but typical faults, such as Powershift clutch replacement. Other expensive but typical faults that might be under but close to the £1000 limit are specifically excluded, such as catalytic converters (unless damaged by a covered fault), entertainment, satnav, heated screens, turbochargers. All of which would be covered by Ford Protect or Warranty Direct.
Even though the car is still under manufacturers warranty and extended cover doesn't start for 6 months, the dealer will not let me cancel, or switch to a Ford Protect warranty, or switch to a prepaid service plan of similar value.
The moral is, do your homework before you buy, and don't be talked into anything by the dealer that you haven't already researched.
