Scam letters?

I received a letter through the post yesterday, in short offering me half of a fortune from Japan, because my surname is the same as a deceased person. They had my full name including middle name.

Is this a new way of scamming? I thought they only did emails. Unless they ask you for money what is there to lose by making contact via the email? Lol

You could string them along for a bit. The scam will start to take shape when they either ask you for a handling fee so the money can be transferred to you or just make a grab for your bank details.
