Safe and Sound Family Biff-about

Need to replace a very aged workhorse with something ready for new family.

Money is tight and I've only got £5000 to do it.

Requirements:

1. Must be very safe (paranoid new parent!)
2. Reliable
3. Good for mostly short journeys with the occasional longer trip
4. Decent boot for all the baby paraphernalia
5. Everything else is a bonus!

Never looked in this market before so no idea where to start...all advice will be very much appreciated.

For me it would be an A4 Avant 1.8TFSI B8 model, something like this can be had for around 5k with a little haggle. It's modern to my eye, 1.8 petrol engine very reliable (no oil issues that 2.0TFSI suffer) and should be a solid family set of wheels.

My only question/concern with the Audi is the cost of repairs should it go wrong. I feel like this would be pricey.

The Titanium X Sport would be my first choice with the Lexus second.
